SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The SU men’s soccer team (3-0-0) won its third straight match on Monday, Sept. 4, shutting out Albany (0-3-1), 2-0, at the SU Soccer Stadium. Sophomore Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) and classmate Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario) each scored for the Orange and sophomore goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made three saves to record his seventh career shutout.
Rowley’s goal was his first of the season and came at the 30:38 mark to put the Orange in front, 1-0. Senior captain Richard Asante (North York, Ontario) picked up his first point of the season, assisting on the play. He slid a pass to Rowley, who drilled a shot to the left side of the net from eight yards out. Freshman Luis Martinez (Morristown, N.J.) also assisted on the play.
Hall salted the game away 1:11 into the second half on his team-leading fourth goal when he volleyed a header from rookie Pete Hill (Pittsford, N.Y.) into the Albany net to increase the Orange’s cushion to two. It was the first career assist for Hill.
“I just hopped into the box hoping for a deflection,” Hall said. “Pete laid it off perfectly for me and I just volleyed it. I crave for those. I love staying in the box hoping the ball will come to me.”
“I think Kyle’s goal took the wind out of their sails a little bit,” SU head coach Dean Foti said. “They tried to regroup at halftime and you come out and to get a goal like that right away it can really be deflating.”
Cavicchia played all 90 minutes in net for the Orange to record his first shutout of 2006.
The Syracuse offense seized momentum of the game from the opening kickoff. Less than two minutes into the contest, Hall slipped his defender and ripped a shot from point-blank range that was stopped by Great Danes’ keeper Steward Ceus. The play set the tone for the remainder of the contest as SU recorded a total of 21 shots in the match to eight for the Great Danes.
Ceus finished with nine saves and three Albany players paced the Great Danes with two shots each.
The victory improved the Orange’s record against the Great Danes to 3-1 all-time. SU has outscored Albany, 9-2, in those four matches.
SU begins BIG EAST play on Friday, Sept. 8 when it travels to Georgetown for an inter-division conference match. Kickoff against the Hoyas is set for 3:00 p.m.
