QUEENS, N.Y. – The Orange (4-5-1, 0-5-1) picked up its first point in the BIG EAST standings on Wednesday, Sept. 27 with a 1-1 double-overtime stalemate against #23 St. John’s (6-3-2, 3-1-2) at Belson Stadium. The tied ended SU’s five-game conference losing streak.
The Orange trailed 1-0 with less than three minutes remaining until freshman Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) netted his third goal of the season to tie the match, 1-1, with 2:40 left to play in regulation. Woodruff beat St. John’s keeper Jason Landers for the score, knocking in the rebound off his own shot. The goal was the first scored against St. John’s in more than three games and ended the Red Storm’s shutout streak at 451minutes and 15 seconds.
In the two overtimes, St. John’s outshot the Orange, 4-3, but sophomore keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made three saves in the extra sessions, including two in the second overtime. Cavicchia stopped the final shot of the match by the Red Storm’s Billy Hole with 29 seconds to play to preserve the draw. He made a season-high 10 saves in the contest, one short of his personal high set against Cincinnati last season. Cavicchia has 114 saves for his career, three shy of tying Jay Nigrini for 10th on SU’s career list.
Red Storm keeper Jason Landers recorded eight saves in the contest. In addition the Red Storm defense made two team saves, including one on SU sophomore Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) with 9:12 to go in the second overtime when Landers was out of position.
Jeff Stepan scored his team-leading fourth goal on a free kick across the box at 25:55 to put the Red Storm in front, 1-0. Patrik Engstrom and Ryan Soroka each assisted on the play. The two teams played close the rest of the way and it appeared Syracuse was headed to its sixth straight conference loss until Woodruff broke through for the equalizer at 87:40.
Each side had opportunities during overtime, but was turned away by good goalkeeping and solid defense.
"It was a great effort by our guys," SU head coach Dean Foti said. "Especially after we went down a goal. Everyone did a really nice job of staying the course and executing what we thought would work best against St. John's and it resulted in some really good chances to win the game."
Schomaker, who made his first start of the year in the match, and Woodruff paced the SU offense with four shots on goal apiece, and 11 of Syracuse’s 15 shot attempts were on net. The Red Storm launched 19 shots, 11 of which were on goal.
The Orange returns to the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 1 for a 1:00 p.m. match against BIG EAST foe Louisville.
