SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men’s soccer team (4-6-1, 0-6-1) dominated the pace of play versus Louisville (4-6-1, 3-4-0), but lost to the Cardinals, 4-0, at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 1. The Orange out-shot Louisville, 20-11, and generated the majority of the game’s scoring chances, but the Cardinals were more efficient converting theirs into goals, scoring twice in each half to post the victory.
Syracuse took the first four shots of the contest, but Louisville was the team that found the back of the net first, scoring on its first shot of the game. David Guzman served a ball from the left side into the box and Anthony Celebre raced in from the right and headed past SU goalie Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) at 17:58 to put Louisville in front, 1-0. Guzman gave the Cardinals a two-goal advantage in the 36th minute when he beat an Orange defender and delivered a left-footed strike past Cavicchia.
SU came out firing at the start of the second half, recording three scoring chances inside the 18 in the first 10 minutes of the period. Cardinals’ keeper Trae Manny was up to the task. He made saves on each chance, including a pair of acrobatic stops.
Louisville’s Gerard Voutier sealed the win for the Cardinals scoring twice after halftime, once at 75:44 and again at 87:46 to close the scoring.
Voutier (2g) and Guzman (2g, 2a) each finished with four points for Louisville. Manny made six saves and played all 90 minutes in net for the Cardinals to earn the shutout.
Cavicchia stopped three shots in goal for Syracuse to raise his career total 117. He is tied with Jay Nigrini for 10th on SU’s career saves chart.
Senior captain Richard Asante (North York, Ontario) paced the SU offense with eight shots, two of which were on goal, from his midfield position.
In addition to out-shooting the Cardinals, Syracuse also held a 9-4 margin in corner kicks, including a 4-1 advantage in the first period, but it couldn’t break into the scoring column.
SU returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 7 when it plays at Red Division rival Villanova. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
