SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The SU men’s soccer team (3-4-0, 0-4-0) lost its fourth consecutive conference match on Sunday, Sept. 17 to Connecticut (3-2-2, 3-0-1) by the score of 2-0 in front of 1,038 fans at the SU Soccer Stadium. Sophomore goalie Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) reached a personal milestone in the match, recording four saves to increase his career total to 100.
Cavicchia stopped 76 shots in his rookie season of 2005 and has 24 saves for the Orange this year. He is 17 saves shy of tying Jay Nigrini for 10th on SU’s career saves list. Nigrini made 117 stops from 1993-96.
The 1,038 fans in attendance was the fourth-largest crowd in SU Soccer Stadium history. SU also drew more than 1,000 fans to the facility for the season-opener against Niagara on Aug. 25. This marks the first time the Orange have had two separate crowds of more than 1,000 in the same season.
The Orange recorded its best scoring opportunity against Connecticut in the 35th minute when junior Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, British Columbia) headed a ball that was played into the box. The shot was ticketed for the upper right corner of the net, but Huskies’ keeper Matt Sangeloty leaped and deflected the shot over the cross bar. The play shifted the momentum of the game and Connecticut’s Ryan Cordeiro gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead approximately three minutes later when he launched a left-footed shot from 35 yards out that found the upper left corner of the SU goal at 38:33.
In the second half, the Huskies scored again when Akeem Priestley’s cross deflected off Peetoom into the Orange net at 50:42 for an own goal.
The two-goal lead proved insurmountable as SU pushed forward trying to tie the match, but did not record any serious scoring chances for the remainder of the contest.
“Connecticut’s really good with the ball,” Orange head coach Dean Foti said. “They are well-organized and at times today it was very difficult to get the ball off of them. We struggled up front today and it was a combination of things. Some of the balls delivered to them (the forwards) today weren’t good and when they were good we managed to give them away.”
“We’re not combining properly right now,” SU forward Ryan Hall said of his team’s ability to put the ball in the net. “We’ve gone over it in practice we just have to execute it now and play more as a unit.”
Sangeloty made four saves for the Huskies to register his second shutout of the season.
The triumph marked the third straight win for Connecticut in its series with the Orange.
Syracuse will wrap up its three-game homestand on Wednesday, Sept. 20 with a non-conference match against Binghamton. The game will start at 7:00 p.m. and admission is free.
