SYRACUSE – The Orange men’s soccer team (4-4-0) stopped its four-game losing skid on Wednesday, Sept. 20 with a 1-0 shutout of Binghamton (2-5-3) at the SU Soccer Stadium. Senior captain Richard Asante (North York, Ontario) netted the game’s only goal at 75:44.
The tally was Asante’s second of the season and came after he settled a ball in the Binghamton end of the field. He eluded a Bearcats’ defender and delivered a strike to the top left corner of the goal from 25 yards out to clinch the win.
The victory improved SU’s record to 4-0 against non-conference opponents this season. It also represented the Orange’s second straight win against the Bearcats in a match up of two teams that hadn’t met since 1976.
“It was a good win,” SU head coach Dean Foti said. “We haven’t had one in a couple of weeks. We knew it would be a grind tonight. Rich (Asante) had a great game. He scored a great goal.”
Freshman goalie Andrew Usyk (Boca Raton, Fla.) and sophomore Robert Smith (Niagara Falls, Ontario) combined for SU’s second shutout of the season. Usyk started the game and made two saves in the first half. Smith replaced him at the intermission and made two saves to earn the victory. It was the first appearances for both players in an SU uniform.
In addition to Usyk, freshmen Jake Young (Blandon, Pa.) and Elliott Townsend each made their first starts in the contest. Sophomores Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.), Tyler Stoviak (Malvern, Pa.) and rookie Erik Kreider (Webster, N.Y.) each saw their first game action of 2006 against Binghamton.
The Bearcats generated its only serious scoring chance after the Orange gained its 1-0 margin when Matt Narodes’ volley from three yards out hit the outside of the goal with 10 minutes remaining. The SU defense locked down the Binghamton attack for the remainder of the match.
Narode and Adam Chavez led the Bearcats’ offense with three shots each. Keeper Jason Stenta played all 90 minutes in net and made two saves.
The Orange returns to BIG EAST action when it plays at Cincinnati on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m.
