SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) scored his second straight game-winning goal to lift the Orange (6-6-1) to a 1-0, double-overtime victory against non-conference opponent Hartwick (6-7-2) on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Woodruff netted the golden goal with 4:38 to go in the second extra session with a sliding shot inside the far post.
Freshman Luis Martinez (Morristown, N.J.) started the play, clearing the ball up the right side of the field to sophomore Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario). Hall raced past a Hartwick defender and sent the ball toward the far post from just inside the 18. Woodruff came into the box from the left and slid toward the goal line, deflecting Hall’s cross into the net at 105:22 and touching off a wild on-field celebration by the Orange.
“It was a typical Hansen play,” Orange head coach Dean Foti said after the match. “He’s been doing it all year. He’s the kind of guy that sticks his nose in and good things happen for us when he does.”
The tally was Woodruff’s second straight golden goal and his fifth score of the season. He also netted the game-winner for the Orange at Villanova on Oct. 7. Woodruff is tied with Hall for the team lead in goals (5) and he has notched SU’s last three tallies dating back to the match at St. John’s on Sept. 27.
“You grind it out,” Woodruff said of his goal. “You get in the right spot and keep working hard and good things happen.”
The victory put the finishing touches on a 5-0-0 non-conference season for the Orange. It is the first time in school history SU has ever posted an unbeaten and untied non-league mark. The win also represented the 50th for the Orange at the SU Soccer Stadium. Syracuse is 50-37-7 since the facility opened for the 1996 season.
Sophomore Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) played the entire match in goal for SU and made three saves to earn his second consecutive shutout and his third blanking of the season.
Joe Gibson played 62:47 between the posts for the Hawks and took the loss. He left the game in the third minute because of an injury and was replaced by Ryan Cruise, but returned at the beginning of second half and played the remainder of the match.
Barry Pearson led the Hawks’ offensive attack with five shots and John Paul Boyle recorded three. Boyle generated Hartwick’s best scoring opportunity of the game in the 50th minute with a shot from the left side of the box, but his chance was knocked aside by a sprawling Cavicchia.
Syracuse returns to BIG EAST play this weekend. The Orange will play its final road match of 2006 on Sunday, Oct. 15 at South Florida. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
