TAMPA, Fla. – USF’s Kevon Neaves scored with 4:15 left in the second overtime to give the Bulls (8-4-3, 4-2-3) a 2-1 victory against Syracuse (6-7-1, 1-7-1) on Sunday, Oct. 15 at the USF Soccer Stadium. Neaves tallied the golden goal off a free kick, bending a shot around SU’s wall from 23 yards out.
Neaves finished with three points in the match. He also had a hand in USF’s first score, recording an assist on Jason Devenish’s goal 32 seconds into the second half to put the Bulls on top, 1-0. It was Devenish’s first goal of the season.
SU rookie Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) scored for the third time in the last three games to tie the contest at 1-1 at the 62:58 mark. It was Woodruff’s team-leading sixth goal of the season. In the next 10 minutes following Woodruff’s equalizer, sophomore goalie Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made saves on three USF scoring chances to keep the match square, and he made four of his game-high five saves in the second half.
The Orange nearly netted the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute, but sophomore Jimmy Linus’ (Blue Bell, Pa.) shot ricocheted off the goal post. Woodruff and freshman Luis Martinez (Morristown, N.J.) followed up Linus’ chance with shots of their own, but Woodruff’s chance was blocked and Martinez’s went wide.
In the first overtime, SU generated the first two shot attempts of the period, but could not tally the game-winner.
Linus recorded SU’s only shot in the second overtime at 102:11, but the chance went over the cross bar. Neaves’ golden goal came on USF’s only scoring opportunity of the second extra session.
Bulls’ goalkeeper Dane Brenner made two saves to earn the win.
USF’s victory evened the all-time series between the two schools at 1-1.
The Orange returns home for the final two games of the regular season beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 18 with a 7:00 p.m. match against BIG EAST Red Division opponent Rutgers at the SU Soccer Stadium.
