VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Orange (5-6-1, 1-6-1) earned its first league win of the season, shutting out Red Division rival Villanova (6-7-1, 2-6-0) by the score of 1-0 on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Villanova Soccer Complex. Rookie Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) netted the only goal of the game at 28:36 to provide the winning margin. The victory keeps the Orange in the hunt for a conference championship bid.
The goal was Woodruff’s fourth of the season and was his team-leading second game-winner of the year. Sophomores Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario) and Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) set up Woodruff’s tally with some nifty passing. Schomaker started the play, sending a pass to Hall in the box. Hall touched it to Woodruff, who converted the scoring chance with a blast to the lower left side of the Villanova net. Schomaker’s assist was his first point of 2006.
“We were very prepared mentally and physically,” SU head coach Dean Foti said after the match. “We worked hard to create scoring chances and competed at the end when they tried to get back and tie the game.”
Woodruff was one of the primary offensive threats all day for SU. He led the team with six shot attempts and the Orange out-shot the Wildcats, 18-16, in the match.
Villanova’s best opportunity to tie the game came in the 75th minute when Mike Del Guercio’s shot was bobbled by Orange sophomore keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario). Billy Whiteside chipped the ball free and into the Syracuse goal, but the referee ruled that Cavicchia had gained possession and disallowed the score.
Cavicchia made a game-high seven saves to record his second shutout of the season. His seven stops moved him into sole possession of 10th on the Orange’s career saves list (124).
Villanova keeper Jason Friel was credited with six saves in the contest.
Syracuse wraps up on its non-conference slate on Tuesday, Oct. 10 with a 7:00 p.m. match versus Hartwick at the SU Soccer Stadium.
