Senior attackman Michael Springer (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) scored his 200th career point to help lead the No. 5-ranked Syracuse men's lacrosse team to a 16-7 victory against Brown at the Carrier Dome. The SU attack forced Brown into eight failed clears and made the most of those turnovers as Springer finished the day with three goals and two assists. Fellow attackman Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) poured in a game-high six points (three goals, three assists), and senior Liam Banks (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) chipped in with a goal and three assists. Six other Orangemen tallied goals in the win.
Syracuse (5-2) went nearly 10 minutes before scoring a goal. The Orangemen took a 1-0 lead when freshman midfielder Greg Rommel (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) hit Banks with a long, diagonal feed at the 5:05 mark. Brown tallied the next three goals to jump in front, 3-1, at 14:42 of the second quarter. Christopher Mucciolo, Jonathon Thompson and Britton Derkac all scored for the Bears.
The Orange turned things around with a 4-0 run in the second quarter which put them on top, 5-3. Powell found junior attackman Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin) at the 12:48 mark. Two minutes later, junior Sean Lindsay (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland Panas) netted the first of his three goals to tie the score at 3-3. Senior midfielder Mike Smith (Greenport, N.Y./Baldwin) gave SU the lead for good when he punched in a pass from Springer just 24 seconds after Lindsay's tally. Powell capped off the run with an unassisted goal from the left side at the 9:38 mark.
Mucciolo and Derkac each registered goals for Brown in the remaining minutes of the second quarter, but Powell, Banks and Springer teamed up to put two more goals up on the scoreboard. SU led, 7-5, at halftime.
Head coach John Desko, who recorded his 60th win as Syracuse head coach (60-13 in five seasons), saw his team outscore the Bears, 5-1, in the third quarter. Powell had a goal and two assists, while Springer picked up a goal and an assist. His unassisted goal with 15 seconds remaining in the period gave SU a 12-6 advantage and marked the 200th point of his career. He is just the 13th player in school history to reach the 200-point milestone. Springer has 201 career points (141 goals, 60 assists). He is sixth on the all-time goals list.
Chazz Woodson scored Brown's lone goal in the third quarter. Thompson kept it at a six-goal margin (13-7) with 10:34 left to play. Unfortunately, for Brown, it would be its final goal of the day. Lindsay, senior Pat Hogan (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) and junior Alex Zink (Rowayton, Conn./Darien) combined to give SU a nine-goal lead, its largest of the day (16-7). Zink's goal, the final score of the day, was a man-up tally with 4:31 remaining in the contest.
Syracuse will play its next game on the road against No. 10 Loyola in Baltimore. Faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. on April 5.
