Syracuse senior midfielder Chris Bickel (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) won the first two faceoffs of the game against Loyola's Ryan Radonis, the nation's leading face-off man, and the fourth-ranked Orangemen never looked back, cruising to a 17-6 triumph against the No. 11-ranked Greyhounds at Curley Field. It was the largest margin of victory for Syracuse against Loyola since the 1990 NCAA Championship game when the Orangemen won by 12 goals, 21-9.
The SU defense held Loyola to just one goal in the first half, the fewest amount of goals it has allowed an opponent this season in the opening 30 minutes. The Orangemen jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the 9:39 mark of the second quarter. Junior attackman Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) had a goal and two assists during that span.
Jim Fink received a pass from Stephen Brundage and put Loyola on the scoreboard at 8:16 of the second period. Syracuse tallied the last three goals of the half to control at intermission, 9-1. Junior midfielder Steve Vallone (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) and senior attackman Liam Banks (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) each netted two goals for the Orangemen in the first half.
Junior midfielder Sean Lindsay (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland Panas) increased SU's lead to 11-1 with back-to-back goals to start the third quarter.
Gunnar Goettelmann registered LC's second goal at the 12:58 mark. Syracuse responded by tallying the next four goals, all of which were carried out by the Orangemen's four-headed attack monster of Powell, Banks, Michael Springer (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin). Powell scored twice, while Banks fed Nee. Springer scored off a pass from Nee and SU owned a 15-2 advantage with 6:41 remaining in the third quarter.
Junior goaltender Nick Donatelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) replaced SU starter Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman) in the third quarter. Pfeifer had a strong day with eight saves and only two goals allowed in a little more than 38 minutes. Brundage quickly scored on Donatelli, netting his 15th goal of the season at 6:06 of the third quarter.
With 2:42 left in the third stanza, Powell dished off to Nee who converted for his second goal of the day and gave SU a 16-3 edge. Powell, the game's high scorer with three goals and four assists, recorded his 100th career assist on the play.
SU head coach John Desko emptied his bench in the fourth quarter. Sophomore attackman Zack Wallace (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baker) scored his first goal of the season (second of his career) off a nice pass from Kyle Olson (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) at 11:42 of the final period. It put SU ahead by 14 goals, 17-3.
Loyola registered the game's final three goals. Pat Shek scored twice, while Rayland Baxter tallied his third goal of the year.
Syracuse won its third game in a row and is now 6-2 on the season. The Orangemen play host to No. 12-ranked Cornell at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8.
Loyola's record is 5-3.
