CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- Senior midfielder Spencer Wright (San Diego, Calif./Junipero Serra) scored an unassisted goal at the 5:44 mark of the fourth quarter to break a 13-13 tie between second-ranked Syracuse and fifth-ranked Virginia at Klöckner Stadium. The goal, Wright's second of the contest, turned out to be the game-winner. Sophomore Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) added an insurance goal with three seconds remaining off a long feed from junior defenseman Sol Bliss (Tully, N.Y./Tully) to give the Orangemen a 15-13 triumph.
Red-shirt freshman goalie Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman) had an outstanding game for SU. After allowing six Cavalier goals in the first quarter, Pfeifer settled down to record 18 saves in the game, including 10 in the second half.
Senior attackman Josh Coffman (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) tied his career-high with four goals, all in the first half.
The two teams played to a 6-6 tie in the first quarter. SU jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind goals from sophomore attackman Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin) and junior attackman Michael Springer (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood).
Virginia netted the game's next five goals to take a 5-2 lead. Nee scored his second goal of the game at the 6:35 mark of the first quarter and Coffman tallied twice to tie the game at 5-5. Brendan Mohler put the Cavs up, 6-5, with 3:59 left in the opening quarter, but Powell tied it at 6-6 with his first of four goals with three seconds remaining.
Syracuse (2-0) outscored Virginia, 5-2, in the second quarter. Springer gave SU a 7-6 lead with a behind-the-back goal at the 14:25 mark. Coffman had two markers, while Wright and Powell also added goals. Wright fed Powell for a man-up goal at the 4:06 mark and it gave SU a 10-7 advantage. The Orangemen led, 11-8, at halftime.
In the third quarter, UVA pulled to within 11-10, thanks to a goal by Jared Little at the 9:07 mark. Powell stretched SU's lead to two goals (12-10) with a score at the 7:24 mark.
In the second half, SU junior face-off specialist Chris Bickel (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) won six of nine draws, including four in the fourth quarter that helped the Orangemen gain possession.
Springer sent a rocket of a shot into the goal for a man-up tally at the 14:25 mark of the fourth quarter. He was assisted by Powell and that gave the Orangemen a 13-10 lead, their largest before the contest ended.
Virginia (1-1) registered three goals during the course of the next eight minutes, including two by freshman Joe Yevoli. His second goal of the quarter tied the game at 13-13 with 6:23 remaining.
