Former All-American Steve Scaramuzzino joined the Orange as a volunteer assistant prior to the 2010 season and is in his fifth year helping assistant coach Lelan Rogers coordinate the defense.
An inductee in the Upstate Chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame as a player and as part of the 1984 Empire State Team, Scaramuzzino was an All-American player at Syracuse.
His tutelage has helped turn Scott Firman (2017), Paolo Ciferri (2017), Brandon Mullins (2014, 2015 and 2016), Peter Macartney (2015), Sean Young (2015), Matt Harris (2014) and Brian Megill (2013) into All-Americans since he began coaching the defensive side of the field.
In 2013, Scaramuzzino mentored one of the top defensive midfields in the nation as the Orange defense played some of its best lacrosse in the NCAA Tournament, holding its first three playoff opponents to an average of six goals per game.
Scaramuzzino’s defensive midfielders have also helped lead the Orange to becoming one of the best clearing programs in the game, setting another program record with a .919 clearing percentage in
In his first three years on the staff, Scaramuzzino worked with the SU offense and coached seven All-Americans, including 2010 BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year Chris Daniello and 2011 BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year Stephen Keogh.
Like the rest of the Orange coaches, Scaramuzzino is a Syracuse University alum. He played for Roy Simmons Jr. from 1986-89 and was a three-year starter at long pole. He was a member of two national championship teams (1988 and 1989) and was co-captain of the Orange as a senior in 1989. Scaramuzzino earned second-team All-America honors following his senior year and was invited to play in the North-South Senior All-Star Game. After his college playing career ended, Scaramuzzino remained active in professional lacrosse and was invited to Team USA tryouts in 1993 and 1997.
Scaramuzzino got his coaching start at Navy in 1990 and he served as an assistant there from 1990-93, helping the Midshipmen to two NCAA Tournament appearances (1992 and 1993). In addition to his college coaching experience, Scaramuzzino has coached professionally in Major League Lacrosse (MLL) and the National Lacrosse League (NLL), including the 2007 season when he was an assistant for the MLL’s Chicago Machine under Rogers. Scaramuzzino also coached and played internationally with the English Lacrosse Union (ELU) and Heaton Mersey Lacrosse Club in 1989 and 1990.
At the youth level, Scaramuzzino served as a coach and was a founding member of the Simmons Boys and Girls Lacrosse League. He is also co-founder of the Orange Crush Club, one of the top youth lacrosse programs in Upstate New York. In 2009, Scaramuzzino served as an assistant coach for former SU standout Jamie Archer at Jamesville-DeWitt High School and helped the Red Rams to a berth in the state semifinals.
Scaramuzzino’s pro playing experience includes five seasons in the NLL, including three with the Syracuse Smash (1998-2000). In 1991, he earned the “Sixth Man” award with the Pittsburgh Bulls.
A graduate of West Genesee High School, Scaramuzzino played for legendary coach Mike Messere and was a member of the Wildcats’ 1985 state championship team. He also helped lead the Central team to the first Empire State Games gold medal in lacrosse in 1984.
Scaramuzzino is the owner of a commercial real estate and brokerage firm in Syracuse. He and his wife, Jessica, have three children, Alexis, Parker and Ethan.
