Senior Year (2010): All-BIG EAST Second Team selection … Team captain … Ranks 25th nationally and second in the BIG EAST in punting average with 43.84 yards … 2011 'Cuse Awards Syracuse 8 Courage Award winner ... Long’s 43.3 career punting average ranks ninth nationally among active punters in the FBS … His 2010 season average of 43.8 yards per punt ranks fourth on the Syracuse single-season record.
Long did not participate in the 2010 New Era Pinstripe Bowl due to surgery to remove a brain tumor, which was performed on Dec. 14. In early December, Long notified the Syracuse University sports medicine staff that he had been experiencing headaches for the past several weeks. An MRI performed on December 2, 2010 revealed the tumor required imminent surgery. On Dec. 21, Long announced that pathology performed on the tissue revealed that there were malignant cells remaining that required further medical treatment. The Syracuse University football team, coaches and staff have Rob in their thoughts and prayers for his full recovery.
