Reminder: New Travel Departure Legislation
As of August 1, the NCAA adopted new guidelines regarding student-athlete
travel to and from athletic contests during their championship segments. Bylaw
16.8.1.2.1 used to state that student-athletes were not permitted to depart for a competition
more than 48 hours prior to the start of the competition, and that they were
not permitted to remain no more than 36 hours (24 for men’s basketball) following
the conclusion of the competition. However, it is now up to the university to determine
when student-athletes may depart for competitions. The Stevenson Center will
be sending out letters informing faculty of student-athlete travel schedules.
Please note - the new legislation does not apply to sports during their non-championships
seasons. Spring sports are not permitted to miss fall class in order to travel
to competitions, and vice-versa.
