The Syracuse University Volleyball program (6-1, 0-0 ACC) kicked off its weekend home-and-home series against the Colgate Raiders on Friday evening, starting with a match on the road at Colgate's Cotterell Court. Despite taking the opening set, the Orange dropped their first match of the year as they fell to the Raiders, 3-1.

Gabby McLaughlin and Skylar George paced the offense, with the two combining for 29 kills on the evening. McLaughlin posted her fifth double-double of the year as well, adding 14 digs. Tehya Maeva posted her most assists in a Syracuse uniform with 49 on the evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange came out of the gates firing behind the strong swing of George. George racked up eight kills in the first set alone. Despite the powerful offensive start, the Orange never built a lead more than three points. Yet, they held the advantage for much of the opening frame and George finished it off with her eighth kill of the set to win, 25-22.

It was much of the same to start the second set, with the two teams trading blows until the Orange went on a 6-0 run to open up an 18-12 lead. Yet, the Raiders went on a couple of runs of their own as they eventually secured the set, 27-25.

The third set was close the entire way, with the set being tied on nine separate occasions. However, the Raiders pulled away down the stretch of the set to pull away, 25-20.

With their backs up against the wall, the Orange battled up until the very end. The Raiders led 23-19, yet the Orange were able to claw back with a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to 24-23. Yet, the Raiders put the finishing touches on the win with a kill to secure victory.

The loss drops the Orange to 6-1 on the young season. The defeat also snaps Syracuse's 18-match non-conference winning streak.

NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS

Skylar George and Gabby McLaughlin paced the offense with a combined 29 kills.
Tehya Maeva posted a Syracuse career high with 49 assists in the defeat.
George finished with 13 kills on a .346 hitting percentage.
Veronica Sierzant made the most of her time on the court, recording four kills on four attempts.
Soana Lea'ea finished with four blocks to go along with 11 kills.
McLaughlin and Rana Yamada led the team in digs with 14 each.
The match featured 28 tie scores and 13 different lead changes within sets.

The Orange will be back on their home court to finish the weekend series with the Raiders tomorrow night. The match will start at 6:00 PM and stream on ACCNx.
