PUCK DROP
- The Orange will face Mercyhurst in Erie, Paennsylvania for the final regular season games on Friday and Saturday.
- 'Cuse earned two points last time the teams faced off when Syracuse earned the shootout win in the first game but then fell to the Lakers in the second game.
- This is an important matchup for the 'Cuse as it looks ahead to playoffs for home ice advantage in the AHA postseason. Syracuse currently sits in fourth place in the AHA standings, trailing RIT by one point. Lindenwood sits in fifth now following its losses to Penn State last weekend, one point behind the Orange. The No. 3 seed and No. 4 seed will have home ice advantage for the first round of playoffs, while the one and two seed will have the advantage for the semifinals after a bye.
- Both games will be streamed on FloHockey as puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday at Mercyhurst Ice Center.
SYRACUSE IN THE WINTER OLYMPICS
- Syracuse women's ice hockey is being represented across three different nations competing for three different nations, USA, Canada and Japan.
- Two Orange alum and current head coach Britni Smith are competing in Milan for gold in this year's Olympic Winter Games. Melissa Piacentini '16 will be Team USA's Video Coach, Smith will serve as an Assistant Coach for Team Canada, and Akane Hosoyamada '15 will be playing for Team Japan making her third Winter Olympics appearance.
- USA finished 4-0 in the preliminary group round outscoring opponents 20-1 over the four matches. Including a 5-0 win over Canada on Tuesday to finish the group stage. USA is set to face Italy on Friday at 3:10 p.m. ET in the quarterfinals.
- Canada went 3-1 in group pool-play, with the only loss coming from USA. But despite the loss, Canada was dominant in pool play outscoring opponents 14-1 in their three wins. Canada will play Germany on Saturday at 10:40 a.m. in the quarterfinals.
- Japan finished 1-3 in Group B, the lone win coming from a 3-2 victory over France. Unfortunately, Hosoyamada and Japan will not continue into the quarterfinals as the team failed to qualify and finished in ninth place.
THE PLAYOFF PUSH
- As the 2025-26 regular season comes to a close, there is a tight race in the AHA as teams fight for playoff seeding.
- Penn State and Mercyhurst have clinched first-round byes in the conference tournament and home ice advantage for the semifinal round. But the No. 3 and No. 4 seed and home ice in the first round is very much up for grabs between four teams. The No. 5 seed will travel to the No. 4 seed and No. 6 and No. 7 will face each other for a play-in game at the No. 3 seed, the winner of that match will then play the three seed.
- Only five points separates third place from sixth place, it will be a race to the finish for Lindenwood (30 pts), RIT (32 pts), Syracuse (31 pts), and Robert Morris (27 pts) in the regular season.
- Syracuse and RIT each picked up three points last weekend to jump into fourth and third, Lindenwood fell to fifth in the standings after being swept by Penn State last weekend respectively. Robert Morris gained six points in an effort to catch up with the pack after it swept Delaware.
- In the final week of AHA play, Syracuse will travel to Mercyhurst, RIT visits Penn State, and Lindenwood faces Robert Morris. Major games that would determine the final standings.
- In the event there is a tie in the standings, tiebreakers are as follows: Head-to-head winning percentage, conference wins, head-to-head goal differential, goals allowed in head-to-head competition, head-to-head winning percentage in games against teams starting with the No. 1 team down to the No. 7 team, and goal differential in games against teams starting with the No. 1 team down to the No. 7 team.
