After a 42-41 overtime win over UConn, the Orange shift their focus to Virginia. Kickoff from Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va., is set for 7:30 p.m. ET with the game airing on ACC Network on Saturday, Oct. 10.
Â
Coming off the overtime win, head coach Fran Brown is eager to get started on a new challenge against the Cavaliers.
Â
"Really just excited about the opportunity we get to go out and play UVA this weekend," Brown said. "Coach Elliott is a really good coach. I think they are tough, they run the ball extremely well, they have a bunch of really good running backs and a tough quarterback. We got our hands full this week but excited for the opportunity to go down there and get a chance to go play them at home on Saturday night."
Â
Quarterback Amari Odom made his first start in a Syracuse uniform against UConn, spearheading a win on the road. Odom threw for five touchdowns, tying the program single-game record. He also ran for a touchdown in the win, bringing his total touchdowns to six and became just the fifth player in program history to be responsible for six or more touchdowns in a single game. Brown said he's learned a lot about Odom, including that he's a "winner".
Â
"I learned that he's a winner and he likes to compete," Brown said. "He loves football. There's no moment too big or too small for him. He was able to go score a touchdown, do a dance and then just focus right back in. He's a competitor and an athlete. I'm thankful that he's on our team and excited about our opportunity for him to go out and compete at practice."
Â
Wide Receiver Umari Hatcher was named the ACC's Offensive Receiver of the Week. He posted 12 catches for 152 yards and three touchdowns. His final touchdown came on fourth-and-goal from the UConn 17-yard line in overtime to set up the game-sealing two-point conversion. Brown said it comes down to Hatcher doing his job and making the most of his opportunities in practice.
Â
"You just go do your job," Brown said when asked about Hatcher's performance last weekend. "Just make the reps count, don't count the reps. I think he's is making the most of the reps, he's making the reps count for him, he embodies that. He's a guy that just shows you 'I'm making the reps count.' So, look what it's doing for him and he's playing good football."
Â
The Orange are in the homestretch of a 35-day period away from home. Saturday's game against Virginia will serve as the final game on the road before the Orange return home to the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday, October 17, to take on Louisville.
