Syracuse wide receiver Calvin Russell III has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon. The honor follows a career game for the freshman, who posted eight catches for 86 yards and a touchdown in the Orange's overtime win over North Carolina.
Â
Russell's second career touchdown came in crunch time, on Syracuse's opening possession of overtime. Needing a score after North Carolina's overtime touchdown to start the period, Syracuse faced 4th-and-goal when Steve Angeli found Russell in the end zone for a four-yard score that pulled the Orange within one point. Syracuse opted to go for the two-point conversion rather than kick the tying extra point, and Angeli turned to Russell again, connecting with the rookie on an out-breaking route near the front pylon on the two-point try to seal the victory.
Â
Earlier on that drive, Russell had a 16-yard grab on 3rd-and-11 to keep the possession alive and set up his game-winning score. Six of his eight catches and 66 of his 86 yards came in the fourth quarter and overtime combined.
This is the first ACC Rookie of the Week honor for Russell this season after making his collegiate debut against UConn on Oct. 3. Since debuting, Russell has racked up a total of 153 yards for two touchdowns on 16 catches.
Â
The Orange are back in action this Saturday, Oct. 31 at home when No. 19 SMU makes its first-ever trip to the Dome. Tickets are still on sale for the ACC matchup! Fans can visit Cuse.com/FootballTickets to secure their seat in The Loud House now!
