Syracuse faces one of its most common foes when it hosts Colgate on Friday night in the JMA Wireless Dome. It will be the 69th all-time meeting between the Central New York schools, making Colgate Syracuse's third-most frequent competitor.
Tickets for Friday's game and all home games at the JMA Dome this season are on sale now at Cuse.com/FootballTickets. Syracuse is hosting First Responders/Healthcare Appreciation Day at Friday's game.
"I'm thankful and happy for the opportunity that we have to play another game here, for me to be the head coach here," Orange head coach Fran Brown said. "It means a lot to me. I'm excited about, just getting a chance to play in the Dome again. We get to play Friday night, which is pretty cool, so that means it'll be a nice weekend. I'm just happy we get the chance to go compete and get to go against Colgate and Coach Fitzpatrick. When I got here, they had just won a championship at Cortland. I just think he's a real class A guy, a real good dude, so excited and happy for him and his opportunity that he has of being at Colgate."
Syracuse is no stranger to Friday night lights. This week's game marks the eighth time the Orange will play on Friday in the last five years. Syracuse has won nine of their last 14 Friday games. The Orange have played at least one game on Friday every season since 2010. During that stretch, 19 of the 26 games have been played in the JMA Dome. Of the seven remaining games, four were bowl games.
In addition to going for its second-straight win this season, Syracuse will try to extend two other streaks on Friday. The Orange are a perfect 22-0 against FCS foes (formerly Division I-AA) since the separation of major college football programs into two divisions in 1978. The streak includes 21-straight wins in the Dome. Additionally, 'Cuse has won its past 14 contests against opponents from the Empire State.
The Orange are coming off a dramatic come-from-behind overtime victory against UConn last Saturday in the JMA Dome. The defense did not allow a touchdown through the second half and overtime, while the offense scored a pair of TDs in the fourth quarter and in the overtime to give Syracuse the victory. Brown wants his team to focus on execution going into this week's game in order to build on the momentum from last week's win.
"We just gotta get better," Brown said. "Every day we just have to come in the building wanting to get better, we have to be thankful to be in the building, and know that we can get better. It's a just a climb. We all have to be on one and be on the race for that. Everybody has to want to get better, we have to execute better. We aren't executing the way we should execute all the time. We aren't executing to the standard that I know that we can. We have to get on one page, execute, and play complimentary football."
Colgate enters Friday's game with a 0-2 record. The Raiders have lost their opening two games by a combined 10 points. The series with Colgate dates back to the 1891 season, the third season of Syracuse football. The Orange have faced the Raiders 68 times, which is the third-highest total against any opponent in program history.
