Melo's Moment

Carmelo Anthony's ascension from a schoolboy shooting hoops in Baltimore to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame reaches its conclusion this weekend when "Melo" is inducted into the hallowed Hall.
Anthony will be enshrined along with the 2008 U.S. Olympic Men's Basketball Team, of which he was a member, Micky Arison (Contributor), Sue Bird (Player), Danny Crawford (Referee), Billy Donovan (Coach), Sylvia Fowles (Player), Dwight Howard (Player), and Maya Moore (Player).
He becomes the fourth individual associated with Syracuse to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Anthony joins his college coach, Jim Boeheim, and former Syracuse standouts Dave Bing and Vic Hansen.
His decision to enroll at Syracuse University in 2002 forever endeared Anthony to the local community and Orange fans around the world. He fashioned one of the most productive freshman seasons in college basketball that culminated with Syracuse's first NCAA basketball championship in 2003. Anthony was named Freshman of the Year by Basketball Times, ESPN.com, Sporting News and the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). A consensus All-American, he earned BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Year laurels and was a first team All-BIG EAST selection.
Anthony and the Orange put together a remarkable run to the championship, claiming six NCAA Tournament victories, including the title tilt against Kansas. He was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player after averaging 26.5 points and 12.0 rebounds in the two games.
He entered his name in the 2003 NBA Draft following his spectacular collegiate season and was the third overall pick, by the Denver Nuggets. He went on to become one of the most dominant offensive players in NBA history. Anthony earned All-NBA honors six times and ranks 10th all-time in NBA scoring with 28,289 points, He was named to the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team in 2021. Anthony played 19 seasons in the NBA.
Anthony excelled at the international level as well. He won three Olympic gold medals (2008, 2012, 2016) with the U.S. Senior Men's Team. Boeheim served as an assistant coach with those squads.
Despite playing just one season at Syracuse, Anthony has maintained a close connection with the program. His generous gift led to the construction of the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center at the John A. Lally Athletics Complex on campus. More recently, Anthony was a commencement speaker at Syracuse's 2025 graduation ceremony. This fall, his son Kiyan enrolled at Syracuse, where he will follow in his father's footsteps as a member of the men's basketball team.
The weekend festivities include a Friday night Tip-off Gala at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. Saturday's enshrinement ceremony will be conducted at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
