Sam Lawler became the first member of the Orange track and field teams to punch a ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships!
Lawler took eighth in the semifinal of the 10,000-meter run on night one of the NCAA East First Round meet in Jacksonville, which earns him a trip to Eugene, Oregon in two weeks for the NCAA final.
On a night that saw a more than four hour weather delay hold up the start of competition, the Orange ran well into the night, concluding the 10k at nearly 1:30 a.m. Lawler crossed the line in 29:04.98, giving him an eighth-place finish, safely qualifying. Teammate Assaf Harari suffered a close disappointment, finishing 13th overall, one spot out of qualifying. Harari closed in 29:20.79, 1.2 seconds behind the 12th-place spot. Perry Mackinnon took 31st in 30:05.54.
The Orange also had two runners advance to the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Emanuel Joseph got the evening started by advancing on time to Friday in the 110-meter hurdles. Joesph was fourth in his heat (13.91 seconds), but his time earned him a spot among the 24 runners who will compete on Friday.
Xayvion Perkins earned his spot the automatic way, but being a top-three finisher in his heat of the 400-meter hurdles. He posted a time of 51.09 seconds, good for third in his heat.
Thursday's action has been shifted due to forecast. The women will take to the track, beginning for Syracuse at 3 p.m. in the 1,500-meter run.
