ATLANTA - The Syracuse softball team (22-15, 3-12 ACC) used timely hitting and clean defense to shut out Georgia Tech (24-15, 9-6 ACC), 3-0, in the series finale on Saturday at Shirley Mewborn Softball Field. The win marked Syracuse's third ACC victory of the season.
After starting just 1-for-13 at the plate, the Orange broke through by going 5-for-10 across the fifth and sixth innings, with RBI hits from Madison Knight, Taylor Posner, and Madelyn Lopez sparking the offense.
Defensively, Syracuse played error-free softball behind Knight, who tossed a complete game and held the Yellow Jackets to just three hits in the shutout effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Syracuse broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning when Lopez led off with a double and came around to score two batters later on a one-run single by Knight.
The Orange then added a pair of runs in the sixth, as Posner and Lopez ripped back-to-back RBI doubles to the outfield wall, extending the lead to 3-0.
Georgia Tech threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting two runners on base, but Knight and the Syracuse defense held strong to secure the shutout win in Atlanta.
OF NOTE:
'Cuse will play a midweek game at Cornell on Wednesday, April 9. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
