CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Syracuse softball team (22-16, 3-12 ACC) is set for a three-game series at Virginia (27-13, 8-7 ACC), beginning with a Saturday doubleheader at 2 and 4:30 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. The series wraps up with a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday, airing on ACC Network.
ORANGE UPDATE:
'Cuse enters the series at Virginia following a 2-1 midweek loss at Cornell. Kelly Breen gave the Orange an early lead with an RBI sacrifice fly in the second inning, but the Big Red responded with a run in the bottom half before delivering the go-ahead solo homer in the sixth to claim the win.
Before the loss at Cornell, Syracuse traveled to Georgia Tech for a three-game series from April 4-6. The Orange dropped two of the three games to the Yellow Jackets but earned a 3-0 victory in the series finale. In the win, Syracuse overcame a slow start at the plate, starting just 1-for-13, before going 5-for-10 in the fifth and sixth innings. RBI hits from Madison Knight, Taylor Posner, and Madelyn Lopez propelled the Orange to the win.
Syracuse heads into the Virginia series amid an 11-game road swing. The Orange are 3-8 in true road games this season, with wins at Duke (March 15), Le Moyne (March 26), and Georgia Tech (April 5).
Through 38 games, Madelyn Lopez has paced the Orange offense, hitting .441 (49-for-111) with 24 runs, 22 RBIs, and two home runs. Tessa Galipeau (.353), Angie Ramos (.321), and Jadyn Burney (.315) have also been key contributors, each batting above .300 this season.
Taylor Posner has been heating up at the plate, driving in nine runs over Syracuse's last seven games, including a two run homer in the Georgia Tech series, her first of the season. After a slow start, the senior has lifted her batting average to .222 and reestablished herself as a steady contributor in the Orange lineup.
In the circle, Julianna Verni and Madison Knight have shouldered most of Syracuse's pitching duties, combining for 187.1 of the team's 252 innings. The duo has totaled 153 strikeouts, with Knight's 86 ranking seventh in the ACC.
