Spallina and Hiltz Reach Milestone in Win over #20 Colgate

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A career-best 11-point effort from Joey Spallina helped lead the No.10/No. 10 Syracuse men's lacrosse team to a 16-12 victory against No. 20/No. 18 Colgate on Saturday afternoon inside the JMA Wireless Dome.
Spallina and Owen Hiltz became the 18th and 19th players in program history to reach 200 career points thanks to a Spallina-assisted Hiltz goal in the first quarter. Spallina tied Tim O'Hara for the second-fastest player in program history to reach the milestone, recording five goals and six assists in his 42nd career game. Hiltz completed the mark in 54 career games, notching three goals and two assists to tie Paul Gait for the 12th-fastest to 200 points.
The Orange (7-2) posted nine different point scorers in the contest, as Trey Deere (4g), Luke Rhoa (1g), Sam English (1g, 1a), Billy Dwan III (1g), Greg Elijah-Brown (1g), John Mullen (1a), and Jordan Beck (1a) contributed in addition to Spallina and Hiltz.
Syracuse netminder Jimmy McCool made 18 saves on the day, a career-best for the junior. McCool is the first Syracuse player to stop 15+ shots in a game since Will Mark against Virginia last season.
Colgate (5-4) had six players score two goals in the contest, with 10 of those goals scored in the second half.

How It Happened
- Syracuse netted its first goal just five seconds into the contest thanks to a faceoff win and assists by John Mullen and a finish by Owen Hiltz. Colgate responded two and a half minutes later to even the score at 1-1.
- Joey Spallina dished his first assist of the afternoon to Hiltz at 10:21 in the first, as both players recorded their 200th career point on the same goal. The Orange would score three more before a Raiders goal with 35 seconds left put up a 5-2 Syracuse advantage after 15 minutes.
- 'Cuse held Colgate scoreless in the second frame, while two goals from Spallina and another from Sam English gave the Orange an 8-2 lead going in to halftime.
- Colgate opened the scoring quickly in the second half, notching their first just 10 seconds in and netting a second goal at 12:58.
- Five points from Syracuse and four more points from Colgate would narrow the lead to 13-8 in the Orange's favor entering the final 15 minutes of action.
- Colgate scored three goals to narrow the lead to 13-11 Syracuse, before Deere would net his fourth of the game to put 'Cuse on the board for the first time in the quarter.
- Syracuse held on in the final eight minutes, allowing one Colgate score before adding two more of their own for a 16-12 victory and their 7th win of the season.
- Joey Spallina had a career-best day, recording five goals and six assists for a career-high 11 points. His first point of the night (an assist to Hiltz) set him over the 200-career points milestone, along with Hiltz.
- Billy Dwan III scored his second goal of the season in the third quarter, recording his 12th career point and tying Jeff McCormick for 10th on the Syracuse Career Defenseman Points list.
- Nine different Orange players picked up points in the contest, led by Spallina (5g, 6a) and Hiltz (3g, 2a).
- Syracuse now leads the all-time series against Colgate, 51-12-1, in a series that dates back to the 1921 season.
- Syracuse hits the road next Saturday to take on Virginia on Mar. 29. Action from Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. is scheduled to start at 1 p.m., with live coverage on ACC Network Extra.
