SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Four Syracuse University men's lacrosse standouts were selected as team captains for the upcoming 2026 season, head coach Gary Gait and his staff announced.
Billy Dwan III, Riley Figueiras, Joey Spallina, and Finn Thomson will all represent the program as captains for this season.
Dwan is now a two-time captain after serving with Sam English, Caden Kol and Owen Hiltz last spring. A two-time USILA All-America honoree, Dwan has played in 52 games for the Orange, starting in all 37 games over the last two seasons. The Lutherville, Marylander has caused 42 turnovers during his time with the 'Cuse, including 18 in each of the last two seasons. A threat in transition, the left-handed defender has 13 career points thanks to a dozen goals and one assist, which came last spring in a 13-10 win over Johns Hopkins.
Figueiras, one of the top cover defenders in the country, has played in 37 games for Syracuse over the last two years, overcoming a lower body injury during his true freshman season. A balanced defender, the Sunderland, Maryland native has caused 55 turnovers in his career, including 28 in 2024 and another 27 in 2025. He has 58 ground balls to his credit, picking up 31 last spring.
A recipient of three USILA All-America plaudits, Spallina enters his senior year on the cusp of surpassing the program's career points record. The Mount Sinai, New Yorker has started in all 52 games of his career while racking 246 points across 108 goals and 138 assists, becoming one of just 19 players in program history with 200 points. Spallina is tied for ninth in program history with his 246 points, just seven behind Gary Gait's 253 for eighth place and needs 62 points to pass Mike Powell's record mark of 307. Tenacious in the ride as well, Spallina has caused 19 turnovers, including eight during his rookie season and has logged 19 career man-up goals en route to a Tewaaraton Nomination last year (Top 25).
A threat anywhere on the offense, Thomson has played 46 games for Syracuse, making 45 starts. He returned to action late last spring after suffering an upper body injury to finish with 30 points with 23 goals and seven assists. The Toronto, Ontario, Canada product has logged time at both midfield and attack for Syracuse while finishing the 2025 season with a 44.2 shooting percentage.
