Orange Move On To ACC Quarterfinals After 2-1 Win Over Virginia Tech

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The No. 6-seed Syracuse men's soccer team (8-6-3, 4-3-1) defeated No.11-seed Virginia Tech 2-1 in the First Round of the ACC Championship on Wednesday, Nov. 5. Tim Brdaric's two goals helped put the Orange over the Hokies to move on to the Quarterfinal Round of the conference tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Defender Tim Brdaric attacked the net first, heading the ball past Hokie goalkeeper Sam Joseph to give the Orange the 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. Carlos Zambrano was credited with the assist.

Zambrano nearly extended the lead in the 27th minute, but his shot ricocheted off the post.

A 33rd minute corner from Sachiel Ming found Gavin Wigg. The Hokie goalkeeper got a hand on the ball, setting it up for Garrett Holman to strike it into the top of the net. After review, the goal was called back for offside, leaving Syracuse to stand with its 1-0 lead.

Virginia Tech's Declan Quinn put the Hokies on the board in the 42nd minute off a short pass from Joao Felicio to tie the match 1-1 going into the locker room.

A yellow card was issued to Virginia Tech's Amir Ariely in the 57th minute, setting up a free kick for the Orange just outside the box, but Syracuse was unable to find the net with the attempt.

Brdaric struck again, collecting his second goal of the night and putting 'Cuse over the Hokies 2-1 to close out the First Round of the ACC Championship.

OF NOTE

The Orange were outshot by Virginia Tech 18-12, with Syracuse shooting nine shots on target.
'Cuse had three corner kicks compared to the Hokies' seven.
Goalkeeper Tomas Hut collected six saves.

UP NEXT

The Orange will move on to the quarterfinal round of the ACC Championship on Sunday Nov. 9. Syracuse will head to Raleigh to face NC State at the Dail Soccer Complex. Kickoff will be either at 2, 6, or 8 p.m. ET.
