RALEIGH, N.C.- The No. 6-seed Syracuse men's soccer team (9-6-3, 4-3-1) upset No. 3-seed NC State (12-2-4, 4-1-3) in the Quarterfinal Round of the ACC Championship 3-0. Orange goals by Sachiel Ming, Carlos Zambrano and Chimere Omeze put 'Cuse past the Wolfpack, who had previously allowed four goals all season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange defense kept up with the Wolfpack's energy as they denied multiple scoring opportunities for the No.5 team in the country, including Tim Brdaric's denial in the net in the 34th minute.
After a scoreless first half, Syracuse came out of the locker room to change the intensity of the game. In the 52nd minute, Kristjan Fortier passed the ball over to Omeze who found Ming through the crowd of defenders. Ming snuck in with a left-foot rocket to send the ball past NC State goalkeeper, Logan Erb.
A corner kick was awarded to Syracuse in the 69th minute. Zambrano took the ball from the corner, striking it off the pole and sending it into the back of the net for an Olimpico.
Tomas Hut continued to guard the net as he tallied nine saves by the end of the night. Despite Philip Donovan's close shot attempt in the 73rd minute, Hut dove to save the goal attempt. Taig Healy found the ball, but sent it off the goal post to set up his teammate Aidan Payne for the finishing shot. Hut dove again, rejecting the third attempt.
Omeze hustled down the field on a breakaway in the 86th minute. Erb tried to close in on the defender who sent the ball right past him and into the unguarded net.
