Orange Take Down Three-Seed Wake
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Aubrey Turner scored twice to lead Syracuse University field hockey past Wake Forest 3-1 Wednesday afternoon at Trager Stadium, the first time the Orange have beaten the Demon Deacons in the ACC Tournament.
Syracuse (12-5) got two goals from Turner and another from Hattie Madden in the literal last second to secure the victory over the Demon Deacons. Turner opened the scoring in the eighth minute on an assist from Aiden Drabick, marking her sixth goal of the season. The freshman added her second of the day midway through the third quarter, finishing off a long aerial feed from Bo van Kempen to put the Orange up 2-0. Van Kempen contributed assists on Madden's late insurance goal as well.
Madden capped the scoring with less than a second remaining in regulation, converting another van Kempen helper for her eighth goal of the year. Syracuse netminder Jessie Eiselin played all 60 minutes for the first time this year, making 11 saves, weathering a barrage of Wake Forest pressure, particularly in the second half.
Wake Forest (15-4) got its lone goal from Mia Schoenbeck on a penalty stroke in the 34th minute, cutting the Orange lead to 2-1 heading into the fourth quarter. The Demon Deacons outshot Syracuse 15-10 for the game, including a 12-8 advantage in shots on goal, but could not solve the Orange defense down the stretch. Wake Forest netminders made five saves in the losing effort.

How it Happened
- The Orange wasted little time establishing control, with Turner breaking through in the seventh minute. Drabick delivered the assist on Turner's opener, giving Syracuse a 1-0 advantage that held through the first two quarters.
- Both teams traded chances in the second period, with Wake Forest registering just one shot while Syracuse managed four attempts. The Orange held a slim 2-1 edge in shots on goal through 30 minutes, but Syracuse's defense kept the Demon Deacons off the scoreboard to preserve the 1-0 halftime lead.
- The third quarter saw the game's most dramatic stretch. Turner struck again in the 32nd minute, taking a pass from van Kempen and finishing for her seventh goal of the season. The two-goal cushion appeared safe until Wake Forest earned a penalty stroke three minutes later. Schoenbeck stepped up and converted the opportunity, pulling the visitors within 2-1 and injecting life into the contest.
- Wake Forest pressed hard for an equalizer in the final period, outshooting Syracuse 6-3 and earning two penalty corners. The Demon Deacons put three shots on frame, but the Orange goalkeeper tandem stood tall, turning away each attempt to preserve the lead.
- With time running out and Wake Forest pushing numbers forward, Syracuse caught the visitors on a counter attack. Van Kempen found Madden in transition, and the senior buried the chance with less than a second on the clock, sealing the 3-1 victory and her eighth tally of the campaign.
- The win marks Syracuse's third ACC victory of the season as the Orange continue to battle through conference play. Van Kempen's three-assist performance highlighted her playmaking ability, while Turner's two-goal effort provided the offensive punch. The defense bent but didn't break against a potent Wake Forest attack that fired 12 shots on goal.
Up Next for Syracuse
- With an updated schedule, the sixth-seeded Orange get another rematch, this time against two-seed Virginia.
- Game time is slated for 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, with Leah Secondo and Suzanne Bush on hand for ACC Network.
- Syracuse will look to avenge another regular season loss after falling 2-1 against then No. 3 Virginia at the end of September.
