
No. 3/3 Syracuse Loses To No. 6/6 Duke In ACC Semifinals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Three runs of four-or-more goals propelled No. 6/6 Duke ahead of the No. 3/3 Syracuse men's lacrosse team as the Orange lost, 18-13, in the semifinal round of the ACC Championship on Friday night at American Legion Stadium.

The Blue Devils (12-4) jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage and kept the lead for good to stand victorious against Syracuse (11-5). Duke ended the first quarter on a four-goal run and later scored six unanswered between the third and fourth quarters.

Andrew McAdorey (5g, 1a) and Brennan O'Neill (4g, 2a) each had six points to lead the Blue Devils. Dyson Williams added four goals, Josh Zawada had two goals and two assists, and Max Sloat produced two goals and one assist.

Joey Spallina and Jake Stevens each scored four goals in the outing to pace the 'Cuse offense. Owen Hiltz passed out a game-high three assists. Sam English (1g, 2a) and Luke Rhoa (2g) rounded out the Orange players with multi-point performances.

How It Happened
- The Blue Devils netted the first five goals of the game within the first five minutes of action. McAdorey led the way with two goals during the run, while Williams, Zawada and Sloat each contributed one. O'Neill added two assists during the stretch.
- Stevens bagged back-to-back goals for the Orange, including one on a man-up opportunity, and cut Syracuse's deficit to 5-2 with 6:16 left in the first quarter.
- In the ending 5:09 of the first period, Duke scored four consecutive goals to take a 9-2 advantage into the second quarter. McAdorey got the first, followed by goals from O'Neill, Williams and Grant Mitchell.
- The Orange responded with a three-goal run to come within four of the Blue Devils, 9-5, with 9:43 to go in the first half. Spallina sparked the rally, Kohn quickly followed up, and Stevens capped off the run to get a hat trick.
- Duke's McAdorey and O'Neill sandwiched goals between one from Spallina and the squads went into the halftime intermission with a Blue Devil advantage, 11-6. As the clock expired to end the half, a holding penalty was called on Duke which allowed the Orange to get possession and a 30 second man-up opportunity to start the second half.
- Spallina capitalized on the extra-man chance to open the second half by finishing a feed from Finn Thomson. The goal brought the Orange within four of Duke, 11-7.
- The Blue Devils strung together seven unanswered goals from 13:07 in the third quarter to the 13:48-mark in the fourth. O'Neill began the rally with two-straight goals, Williams followed with two more, and McAdorey and Zawada ended the run with a goal each.
- 'Cuse pieced a 6-1 run in the ending 12:56 to finish the contest. During the stretch, Luke Rhoa contributed two, while Spallina, Stevens, Sam English and Billy Dwan each scored one for the Orange. Sloat netted the lone goal of the run for Duke.
