SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse claimed its first series victory against a top-15 opponent in program history, beating No. 15 Virginia Tech, 6-2, Sunday afternoon at Skytop Softball Stadium.
Â
The Orange (25-21, 7-14 ACC) stormed out to an early lead and held on to it for the remainder of the game to beat the Hokies (38-11-1, 18-6).
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST VIRGINIA TECH:Â
In the bottom of the first inning, sophomore Madison Knight slammed a homer to center field and scored Angel Jasso, who singled to center field for the first Orange hit of the game. The home run put 'Cuse in front, 2-0, a lead which they would keep for good.
Â
The Orange doubled their advantage in the bottom of the fifth frame. After sophomore Madelyn Lopez doubled to left center, Knight reached second on an error and Lopez rounded home. Junior Laila Morales-Alves singled and allowed Knight to advance to third, putting runners on the corners. Coming in as a pinch hitter, sophomore Vanessa Flores sent the 3-2 pitch to left center, singling Knight.
Â
Virginia Tech got on the board for the first time in the top of the sixth inning, cutting Syracuse's lead in half. Addy Greene scored from first on an error before a rain delay. Following the delay, Cori McMillan singled home Cameron Fagan.
Â
Syracuse stormed right back, using an RBI single from Jasso and sacrifice fly from junior Taylor Posner to regain a four-run advantage.
Â
Lindsey Hendrix threw her second complete game of the series. She finished the afternoon with one strikeout, four hits and two runs allowed. Neither of the two runs were earned. On the weekend, Hendrix allowed just three runs on nine hits across the 14 innings in the circle while fanning five batters.
