SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Nick Mellen (men's lacrosse) and Cara Quimby (women's lacrosse) are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of April 27.
Â
Mellen is pursuing a Master's degree in information and technology management through the iSchool and has thrice earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
Â
A native of Syracuse, Mellen has been one of the nation's top cover defensemen since joining the Orange. He's a two-time USILA All-American, and his 55 caused turnovers rank fifth in program history. Mellen was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List ahead of the 2020 season, but the team captain missed the final four games of the shortened campaign following an injury suffered vs. Colgate. He announced earlier this offseason that he would not be returning for a sixth year of eligibility at Syracuse.
Â
'Cuse (5-0) finished the season ranked No. 1 in the Inside Lacrosse/Maverik Media Poll. Syracuse picked up nine Inside Lacrosse/Maverik Media All-American nods following the year. Jamie Trimboli and Brendan Curry were tabbed to the first team, while Peter Dearth and Drake Porter picked up second-team accolades. Brett Kennedy earned third-team honors, and Chase Scanlan, Stephen Rehfuss, Jakob Phaup and Tucker Dordevic all earned honorable mention nods.
Â
Quimby is pursuing a disability studies certificate of advanced studies through the School of Education. A native of Schenectady, N.Y., Quimby earned a spot on the 2019 IWLCA Academic Honor Roll and has been on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester she's been at Syracuse.
Â
Quimby recorded four points (3-1) in the shortened 2020 season, with three of those (2-1) coming in Syracuse's 20-2 victory over Binghamton. She registered 34 goals and 16 assists in her Orange career.
Â
Syracuse (7-1) finished the year ranked fourth in the final IWLCA rankings released on Thursday, March 19. The Orange were on a six-game winning streak before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those victories included wins at No. 6 Northwestern and No. 11 Maryland. The Orange ended the season with the top-ranked defense in the nation, allowing just 7.00 goals per game, while senior goalkeeper Asa Goldstock had the lowest goals-against average (7.07).
