Orange come back from five down to win ACC title
The No. 1 Syracuse men's lacrosse team rallied from a five goal deficit with under five minutes to play in the third quarter against No. 17 North Carolina on Saturday at Fetzer Field, winning 12-11 in overtime.
'Cuse tied the game with under a minute to play after Paolo Ciferri emerged from a wild scrum during a 10-man ride by the Orange, taking it the length of the field for the equalizer. Prior to that point, the game hadn't been even since 4-4 midway through the second quarter. The goal was the second of the afternoon for Ciferri, a career-best scoring day.
On the ensuing faceoff, Ben Williams collected the ball for SU, setting up a chance to win it in regulation. Nate Solomon was denied at the doorstep on an incredible kick save from UNC netminder Brian Balkham to send the game to overtime.
It was Williams again who came up with the big faceoff to start the extra session. He won 15-of-25 restarts on the afternoon, which setup the game-winner from Sergio Salcido. 'Cuse earned the extra possession after Nate Solomon collected a key ground ball and was pushed from behind, setting up an extra-man opportunity in OT.
Salcido finished the day with a team-high three goals, while Stephen Rehfuss tied his career-high from a week ago with four points (2-2). Nate Solomon (1-2), Nick Mariano (2-0), Brad Voigt (0-2), Ryan Simmons (1-0) and Peter Dearth (1-0) also contributed to the scoring on the day.
Evan Molloy made six saves to anchor the defensive unit.
The win seals the ACC Regular Season Championship and No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament, Syracuse's eighth conference championship in the last eight seasons including both tournament and regular season crowns.
The game was also Syracuse's eighth one-goal game of the season, a mark that leads the nation, with 'Cuse coming away 7-1 in those games.
Next, Syracuse will host No. 20 Binghamton on Saturday in conjunction with the football team's Spring Showcase at the Carrier Dome. Faceoff is slated for 2 p.m.
