Syracuse is off to a 5-0 start on the season.
ATHENS, Ga. – The Syracuse volleyball team is off to its best start since the 2010 season, after sweeping the Georgia Bulldogs on their home court 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Orange defeated the Bulldogs 25-16, 25-21, and 25-21. The victory puts Syracuse at 5-0 on the season.
The Orange started off strong and never looked back in the first set, leading the entire set and only allowing the Bulldogs to come within three points. Georgia proceeded to turn up the heat offensively for the next two sets, but still couldn't shake the Syracuse defense.
"Overall I thought it was a nice game," Head Coach Leonid Yelin said. "The scores of the sets definitely reflected the intensity of the game. We did a nice job on defense, especially with our serve receive. There are a lot of things we need to work on offensively, but there are also a lot of things to be happy about. We just have to keep moving forward."
The match marked the first ever meeting between the Syracuse and Georgia squads, with the Orange now leading the series 1-0. The victory sealed a 2-0 weekend in SEC Country, after defeating Auburn in five sets on Friday.
Redshirt senior Nicolette Serratore proved herself as a jack of all trades, finishing the day with nine kills, eight digs, and an impressive six service aces. Her six aces on the afternoon now have her tied for second in service aces in a three-set match in program history.
Senior Silvi Uattara led the Orange offense with a team-high and match-high 10 kills, while also tallying six digs. Sophomore libero Belle Sand led the Syracuse defense with 12 digs.
Setter Gosia Wlaszczuk continued to rack up the assists after surpassing the 1,000 assist mark against UConn last weekend. The senior led the team in assists with 20, while also compiling six digs and three kills of her own.
Georgia native Leah Levert celebrated a mini-homecoming, leading the Orange with three blocks on the afternoon and posting five kills.
The Orange return to action next weekend at the LIU Blackbird Invitational in Brooklyn, N.Y. Syracuse will face Arizona in the first of three matches on Friday, Sept. 11 at 4:30 p.m.
