SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse volleyball team picked up its 17th win of the season, defeating ACC foe Clemson in four sets (25-12, 25-15, 22-25, 25-18) on Sunday in the Women's Building. The Orange are now 17-6 overall and 8-4 in conference play.
The efforts of senior outside hitter Silvi Uattara headlined the four-set victory, as she racked up a team-high 17 kills while adding 14 digs and three total blocks. Outside hitter Nicolette Serratore recorded her 11th double-double of the season, totaling 14 kills, 13 digs, and adding four total blocks.
Senior setter Gosia Wlaszczuk paced the Orange offense on the afternoon, tallying 40 assists and 10 digs, notching her 12th double-double of the season.
Sophomore libero Belle Sand led the Syracuse back row with 20 digs. The Orange out-blocked the Tigers 12 total team blocks to three, as sophomore middle blocker Leah Levert led Syracuse at the net with a match-high five blocks.
Wlaszczuk started things off right for the Orange with an ace to begin the first set. After staying tight with a 5-4 lead, Syracuse rattled off five straight points behind a kill from Wlaszczuk and a block from Silvi Uattara, forcing a Clemson timeout.
The brief stoppage in play did little to slow down the Orange, as they cruised on a 9-4 run powered by two kills from Serratore. After another Clemson timeout, Syracuse was able to close out the first set handedly, 25-12. Serratore, Wlaszczuk, and senior outside hitter Monika Salkute helped pave the way for the Orange victory, each contributing three kills.
The second set opened with four straight from the Orange thanks to kills from Uattara and Salkute. Just as was the case in the first set, the Tigers fought back to a 5-4 score, only to drop six straight points, resulting in a Clemson timeout.
Strong play at the net with a kill from Serratore led Syracuse out of the break. Showing few signs of slowing down, the Orange attack finished the set 25-15 behind six kills from Uattara and four from Serratore.
The third set started in a different manner than the first two, with the Tigers jumping out to a 13-6 lead before a Syracuse timeout. The timeout proved rewarding, as the Orange responded with a 9-3 run powered by four kills from Uattara. Looking to slow down the charging Orange, the Tigers called a timeout at the 16-15 mark.
Having battled their way back into the set, Syracuse took a 20-19 lead on a kill from Serratore. After falling behind 21-20 in the two points to follow, two more kills from Serratore gave the Orange a 22-21 advantage, forcing the Tigers to call a timeout. Clemson took four straight out of the timeout to take the third set 25-22.
After trailing behind 4-1 to start the fourth set, the Orange rallied seven straight points to take an 8-4 lead. Back-and-forth play transpired from that point, as Syracuse held onto its four point lead and eventually extended it to six at the 20-14 mark.
Despite a pair of Clemson timeouts and a strong fight from the Tigers, the Orange closed out the fourth set and the match on a block from Serratore and freshman middle blocker Santita Ebangwese, 25-18.
The Orange continue its home stand next weekend, facing ACC rivals North Carolina on Friday at 7 p.m. and NC State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Women's Building. Both matchups are free admission.
