TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Syracuse volleyball team suffered its third ACC loss of the season, falling to #17 Florida State in three sets on Friday in Tallahassee. The Orange are now 6-3 in ACC play and 15-5 overall.
The Seminoles took off in the first set and never looked back, sweeping the Orange in three sets, 25-16, 25-19, 25-20.
Outside hitter Nicolette Serratore led the Orange offense at the net, posting nine kills, while sophomore Leah Levert added seven. Levert also tallied a team-high four blocks.
Senior setter Gosia Wlaszczuk notched her 10th double-double of the 2015 season, racking up 28 assists and a team-high 10 digs.
The Orange took 2-1 lead to start off the match, but the 'Noles soon took control, jumping out to a five-point lead at the 10-5 mark. A kill by Serratore and an attack error on Florida State's end brought Syracuse within three, 10-7, but the Seminoles continued to build momentum heading into the last ten points of the set. A kill by FSU outside hitter Nicole Walch and an unforced Syracuse error put the Seminoles at a six-point advantage, 17-11. Back-to-back kills by the 'Noles extended the FSU lead to eight, 20-12. Levert was Syracuse's only answer in the closing points of the first set, accumulating three kills and the final three points for the Orange, as the Seminoles went on to win the first set, 25-16.
The second set started off in similar fashion, as the two teams swapped points before FSU took off on a 5-0 run to put them up 10-5. A kill by Serratore and an unforced error committed by the Seminoles brought the Orange within two at the 13-11 mark. FSU, however, proceeded to go on a 4-1 run to extend the Seminole lead, 17-13. A kill by Anastasiya Gorelina and an attack error by the 'Noles cut the FSU lead down to three, 20-17. A kill by Wlaszczuk and a subsequent service ace brought the Orange within reach, 19-21. However, the Seminoles answered with three consecutive kills and a service ace to take the second set, 25-19.
Two kills by Salkute and a kill by Levert started the Orange off to a 3-1 lead to begin the third set. Knotting it up at the four-point and eight-point marks, the teams continued to trade points well into the final points of the set. A kill by Levert brought the Orange within one at the 19-20 mark, but FSU immediately answered with a kill, forcing a Syracuse timeout. After the timeout, Levert notched another kill, keeping Syracuse within reach of the lead, 20-21. The Seminoles, however, finished the final set strong, answering with three kills to seal a victory in the final set, 25-20.
The Orange finish off the weekend in Florida, taking on Miami on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Coral Gables, Fla. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
