SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 23 Syracuse (5-1-0) defeated Cornell (2-2-1) by the score of 3-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at the SU Soccer Stadium. It was the Orange's 16th consecutive win against a non-conference opponent dating back to 2012.
The Orange found seams in the Big Red defense and capitalized early and often. Juuso Pasanen was the first to find the back of the net. He scored his first goal of the season in the 18th minute on a shot from 16 yards out off passes from Stefanos Stamoulacatos and Emil Ekblom.
Less than four minutes later, Ekblom finished a pass from Chris Nanco who had carried the ball into the attacking box. Ekblom's goal from seven yards away was his third of the season and gave the Orange a 2-0 advantage.
In the second half, the hosts put the match out of reach. Syracuse outshot the Big Red 11-4 in the last 45 minutes of play. In the final 15 minutes alone, the Orange had six shots, including one by senior captain Nick Perea that found the back of the net, and earned two corners. Perea's marker came with 2:14 to play when Noah Rhynhart crossed the ball to him in the penalty area, resulting in an easy goal to close the game's scoring.

Junior goalie Alex Bono had three saves in the match and didn't allow a goal for the fifth time in six games. The clean sheet moved him into sole possession of second place on SU's all-time shutout list (23), breaking a tie with Robert Cavicchia (2005-08). The victory was the 28th of Bono's career, which puts him in third place on the team's all-time wins list.
"When called upon (Bono) was safe and consistent," said SU head coach Ian McIntyre. "When you're up by two or three goals, as your teammates want to score that third or fourth goal, it's important to keep it tight in the back. There's not many better than Alex at that. We limited their chances tonight, but when called upon he was stout as usual."
Ekblom, who factored in SU's first two goals, finished with a game-high three points (1 goal, 1 assist).
Big Red goalie Zach Zagorski played all 90 minutes and tallied four saves, all of which came in the second half. Peter Chodas and Tommy Griffin led Cornell with two shots each.
Syracuse outshot the Big Red for the game, 15-9. The Orange also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Match Notes: The Orange is 9-1-1 in its last 11 meetings with Cornell, including a 3-0-1 record since former SU assistant coach Jaro Zawislan took over the Big Red program in 2009 ... Pasanen, Stamoulacatos and Rhynhart all tallied their first points of the season ... Alex Halis made his first start of 2014 and played 65 minutes.
