Saturday marked the beginning of the 2014 season for the Orange. 'Cuse finished the day splitting its two games with a 3-set sweep over Delaware State and a grind in which the Orange came up just short against Temple. The victory over DSU extends the Orange all-time record over the Hornets to 3-0 while Temple breaks the 7-7 deadlock to improve its record to 8-7 all-time against Syracuse.
In the first match of the day the Orange needed just three sets to put away the Delaware State Hornets, 25-20, 25-18, 25-16. Gosia Wlaszczuk made her highly anticipated debut at setter after learning the position in the last two weeks. She assisted 28 of the team's 37 kills in the match and recorded five kills of her own. The tandem of Monika Salkute and Silvi Uattara fueled the Orange as they accounted for 23 of the team's 37 kills. Salkute finished with 10 while Uattara ended the game with 13 kills. Once again Lindsay McCabe led the team with seven total blocks, six of which were assisted.
Freshmen saw significant time against the Hornets with Dana Crispi, Lucie Guttakovskaia and Leah Levert all getting their first taste of collegiate action. Levert was the first freshman to get in the game as she was announced as one of the team's starting middle blockers. She recorded her first career kill in the game and was in on two assisted blocks. Crispi picked up three service aces to go along with her two assists and six digs. Also lending a hand on two kills was the tallest setter in the conference, Guttakovskaia.
The Orange and the Owls fought all the way until the end in a tight game throughout the contest. Temple eventually slighted 'Cuse in the fifth set, 17-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-16, 13-15. The game consisted of nine lead changes and 19 tied scores.
Temple held strong defensively holding Uattara to 19 kills on 52 attempts. She led the team with 19 kills in the game while Salkute and McCabe each buried 10 kills each. Salkute also picked up a career best performance with 17 digs. Guttakovskaia just missed the 10-assist mark with eight and Wlaszczuk had 28 in her newfound position.
Syracuse wraps up the Big Orange Tournament tomorrow at 1:30 PM against Niagara.
