SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men's soccer team opened the 2014 preseason with a 4-1 victory against Hartwick Saturday, Aug. 16 on a rainy night at the SU Soccer Stadium. Syracuse scored three times in the match's final 20 minutes to snap a 1-1 tie and improve to 8-1 in exhibition games since 2011.
Freshman Julian Buescher opened the scoring in the first half. Noah Rhynhart, Mike Koegel and Stefanos Stamoulacatos each tallied goals late in the second half. Overall, the offense was very efficient as Syracuse scored on four of seven shots in the match.
"A lot of new faces got a chance to play tonight," SU head coach Ian McIntyre said. "It's a good test for us this early in preseason to play against another college team. It's also a nice change of pace after a hard first few days. To get that first game out of the way was good. Our performance grew stronger as the game wore on and some of our guys coming off the bench really gave us a lift."
Buescher gave SU a 1-0 advantage in the 34th minute by burying a penalty kick after being taken down inside the box.
Hartwick responded early in the second half as Nick Hillis tied the game when he converted a Jack Miller pass in the 56th minute, but that's all the offense the visitors could muster as the Orange came live late in the match.
In the 71st minute, Rhynhart broke the deadlock, finishing a rebound after Hartwick keeper Tom Buckner stopped an Alex Halis shot. Koegel found the net a little more than two minutes later to extend the Syracuse lead to 3-1, and Stamoulacatos put the game's final tally on the board in the 83rd minute when he ripped a shot into the upper-left 90 on a feed from Koegel.
SU goalkeepers Alex Bono and Matt Stith combined for three saves. Bono started and finished with two stops. Stith replaced Bono in the 75th minute and made one save.
Hartwick goalkeeper Tom Buckner played the entire 90 minutes and finished with three saves.
The Orange continues its preseason schedule Friday, Aug. 22 when it travels to Akron, Ohio to take on the Zips. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
