SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- No. 7 Syracuse (6-3) and No. 6 Cornell (9-1) renew one of the longest-running rivalries in college lacrosse Tuesday, April 8 when the Orange visits Schoellkopf Field for a 7 p.m. contest against the Big Red. The game marks the 99th all-time meeting between the two schools.
The Orange looks to remain perfect in non-conference play after beating Binghamton, 10-8, in its most recent outing. Cornell started the year with nine straight wins before losing its first game of the season to Harvard Saturday, 14-9.
TWO GREAT PROGRAMS
SU and Cornell rank second and seventh, respectively, on the list of all-time winningest Division I programs. The Orange has compiled 852 victories, while Cornell has 723. In addition, the two schools have combined to win 14 NCAA titles (SU 11, Cornell 3).
Both sides have been excellent recently. Since 2008, Syracuse is 91-23 (.798) and has won two national titles, including the 2009 championship in overtime against Cornell. The Big Red is 82-26 (.759) in that same stretch with three Final Four appearances.
A WIN AGAINST CORNELL WOULD …
… Be the program's 853rd victory, second all-time behind Hopkins (939).
… Improve SU's record to 92-23 since the start of the 2008 season.
… Be John Desko's 194th career coaching win.
… Keep SU unbeaten this season against non-conference opponents.
… Mark Syracuse's fourth win this year against a top-10 opponent.
… Boost SU's record to 5-0 this season against teams from the state of New York.
… Make Syracuse 6-2 against the Big Red since the start of the 2008 season.
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
Of the 67 Division I lacrosse teams, only five have not lost an out-of-conference game this season and Syracuse is one of them. The Orange is 5-0 in non-league action. The other four non-conference unbeatens are Maryland (6-0), North Carolina (7-0), Bellarmine (6-0) and Cornell (6-0).
NEARING THE CENTURY MARK
Senior Derek Maltz and junior Kevin Rice are both closing in on 100 career points. Maltz (73 goals, 23 assists) has 96 points in 53 games, four short of the milestone. Rice has racked up 93 points (40 goals, 53 assists) in 35 career games. He is SU's 2014 scoring leader with 16 goals and 19 assists this season.
SCOUTING CORNELL
Cornell is one of the top offensive teams in the country. The Big Red rank second in the NCAA in scoring (14.3 goals per game), second in points per game (22.1) and sixth in assists per game (7.8). Dan Lintner (33 goals) is fourth nationally in goals per game contest and Matt Donovan (23 goals, 14 assists) leads the team in points. Connor Buczek is among the nation's most productive midfielders (25 goals, 10 assists).
Defensively, Cornell is allowing 9.1 goals per contest. Three-time Ivy League Rookie of the Week Christian Knight (76 saves, .563 save pct.) has assumed the role of starting goalie, while Jordan Stevens (33 ground balls, 12 caused turnovers) and Tom Freshour (24 ground balls, 15 caused turnovers) are a formidable tandem on close defense.
Faceoff specialist Doug Tesoriero (130-244, .533) helps create offense in transition. Cornell's career leader in ground balls and faceoff wins, Tesoriero has two goals and seven assists this year.
Matt Kerwick was promoted to interim head coach prior to the 2014 season, replacing Ben DeLuca. Kerwick made previous head coaching stops at Randolph-Macon, Hobart and Jacksonville. He was most recently an assistant coach at Georgetown before joining DeLuca's staff in 2013.
THE CORNELL SERIES
The Syracuse-Cornell series dates back to 1920 and the two schools have met every season since 1979. The Orange holds a 62-35-1 series advantage and is 28-18-1 in games played in Ithaca. Since 1988, the Orange is 22-6 against Cornell, including a 13-12 triumph at the Carrier Dome last season that snapped the Big Red's two-game series winning streak.
UP NEXT ...
