Bono ties SU single-season record with 11th shutout
RALEIGH, N.C. --Â Junior goalkeeper Alex Bono tied the school single-season shutout record in No. 5 Syracuse's 0-0 draw with NC State (6-5-4, 1-3-3 ACC) Saturday, Oct. 25 at Dail Soccer Stadium. Bono made six saves to earn his 11th clean sheet of the year, tying Chris Whitcomb who posted 11 shutouts during the 1986 season.
Â
Two of Bono's saves came in overtime as the Orange (13-2-1, 4-2-1 ACC) picked up one point in the race for the ACC Atlantic Division title.
Â
Syracuse was the more dangerous team throughout Saturday's match and outshot the Wolfpack, 17-10, including a 7-3 margin in the two extra sessions.
Â
Oyvind Alseth paced SU with four shots, including three that were on frame. Two of his chances were in the second overtime, but Wolfpack keeper Alex McCauley stopped them both, including an Alseth header from six yards out with 14 seconds to go that would have won the match.
Â
In addition to Alseth's near golden goal, the Orange generated several good offensive opportunities during the course of the game. Julian Buescher ripped a hard shot past McCauley in the 40th minute that bounced off the cross bar. With less than a minute left in regulation, Jordan Murrell's fired a free kick that was cleared away by the Wolfpack defense.
Â
NC State went down a man less than a minute into the first overtime when Zach Knudson was sent off after receiving his second yellow card. The Orange took advantage, recording three shots, but the Wolfpack held on to force a second overtime.
Â
Syracuse kept the pressure on in the final period, tallying four more shots, including Alseth's near winner in the 110th minute.
Â
McCauley recorded a game-high seven saves for the Wolfpack, three of which were in the overtime periods. Michael Bajza led the NC State offense with four shots.
Â
The Orange closes out the regular season on Friday, Oct. 31 at home against Boston College. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Â
