Orange's eight-game winning streak comes to an end
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Louisville's Jerry Ramierez scored in the 97th minute to push the Cardinals (7-5-1, 4-2-1 ACC) past No. 2 Syracuse, 2-1, in overtime on Friday, Oct. 17 at Lynn Stadium. The loss was the Orange's first since Sept. 13 against Notre Dame, ending the team's school-record tying eight-game winning streak.
The deciding goal came via a free kick taken by Tim Kubel, who sent a soaring serve into the box that Ramierez headed inside the right post for his first goal of the season. Ramierez's tally was Louisville's second in the span of 18:38 after the Cards initially trailed 1-0 early in the second half.
Following a tightly contested first period that featured just six shots (four by the Orange and two by Louisville), SU drew a foul in the box during the 55th minute and was awarded a penalty kick. SU captain Nick Perea stepped to the stripe and calmly slotted the ball past Louisville keeper Joachim Ball for the game's first goal.
Â
That's how the score remained until the latter stages of regulation when Kubel converted a PK goal of his own with 11:40 to play. The Orange (12-2-0, 4-2-0 ACC) was dealt another setback a few minutes later when Alex Halis was sent off after receiving his second yellow card.
Â
The Orange played down a man for the final 4:31 of the second half and the overtime period. Louisville capitalized on the advantage as Ramirez's winner came on the first shot by either side in OT.
Ball and Orange goalie Alex Bono each finished with two saves.
Â
Louisville outshot the Orange, 10-8. The Cardinals also held the edge in corner kicks, 5-3, marking the first time this season Syracuse did not finish with more corners than its opponent.
Â
The Orange wraps up non-conference play at home on Tuesday, Oct. 21 against Bucknell. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission to the match is free.
