SYRACUSE, N.Y. – An SU Soccer Stadium record crowd of 1,803 fans saw Virginia (4-3-1, 1-2-1 ACC) defeat the Orange men's soccer team (6-3-0, 1-3-0 ACC) by the final score of 2-0 on Saturday, Sept. 28. The loss snapped SU's three-game winning streak.
"Give Virginia credit," said SU head coach Ian McIntyre. "We'll learn some lessons. When you give a good team like Virginia a couple of goals, it's not good. But our guys kept going and going, and I'm proud of them. They never stopped."
The Cavaliers got on the board early in the match as Jordan Allen scored on a header from near the left post in the sixth minute. Riggs Lennon notched Virginia's second goal when he gathered a deflected ball in the box and buried it in the back of the net in the 41st minute.
The Orange defense tightened in the second half, successfully thwarting four UVa corner kicks and shutting out the Cavaliers in the stanza.
Virginia limited the potent Orange attack to two shots throughout the match. SU's best opportunity came in the 23rd when a shot by freshman Emil Ekblom was knocked away by Cavalier goalkeeper Jeff Gal.
Syracuse goalie Alex Bono finished with five saves, including two diving stops in the second period. Gal finished with one save and earned the shutout.
The Orange returns to the pitch Tuesday, Oct. 1 when it hosts Binghamton at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. The match will be televised live locally on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
Match Notes: The crowd of 1,803 eclipsed the previous crowd record of 1,675 which on hand for last year's BIG EAST quarterfinal match versus Notre Dame.
