SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Alex Halis scored in the 105th minute to lead the Syracuse men's soccer team (7-3-0) to a dramatic 2-1 double-overtime victory against Binghamton (2-6-2) on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The victory extended the Orange's winning streak against non-conference opponents to 10 games.
"In the second half, I thought we were really good," said SU head coach Ian McIntyre. "In our game, unfortunately, if you don't get that second goal you're always leaving yourself a little bit open. They took their chance and thankfully today Alex (Halis) popped up in overtime to get the win."
Opportunities on both sides were at a premium in the first half. The two teams combined for just four shots. However, the Orange capitalized one of its two shots in the first stanza as Stefanos Stamoulacatos collected a loose ball and slotted it past Binghamton goalkeeper Stefano Frantellizzi in the 28th minute for a 1-0 SU lead.
Syracuse controlled play in the second half, outshooting Binghamton, 12-4.However, the Orange could not add to its advantage. Emil Ekblom had the best chance to pad the SU lead, but his shot ricocheted off the post.
The Bearcats eventually took advantage of SU's inability to finish when Ben Nicholson found the back of the net on a rebound, equalizing the match in the 79th minute.
Neither team generated a quality chance in the overtime session until Halis scored the decisive goal just over four minutes into the second period. Halis was the benefactor of a rebound in the box that fell as his feet and he calmly pushed it past Frantellizzi to give Syracuse the victory.
Alex Bono finished with two saves en route to his 20th career victory. Frantellizzi made nine saves to keep the Bearcats in the match.
The Orange concludes its four-game homestand by hosting ACC rival NC State at the SU Soccer Stadium Friday, Oct. 4. The Orange and Wolfpack kick off at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
Match Notes: Syracuse is now 6-0-0 in non-conference play this season … The victory was the Orange's second in a row against Binghamton. SU defeated the Bearcats last season, 1-0 … Bono is now in sole possession of sixth place on the Orange's career wins list … Redshirt sophomore Trevor Alexander made his first career start on defense as Oyvind Alseth, usually a mainstay in the back four, shifted to the midfield.
