SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The fourth-ranked Fighting Irish (2-0-2, 1-0-1 ACC) scored twice in the first half and went on to defeat Syracuse (3-2-0, 0-2-0) by the score of 3-0 on Friday, Sept. 13 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The match represented SU's first home ACC game in any sport.
"We'll go back to the training ground and correct our mistakes and we'll be better come Tuesday," SU head coach Ian McIntyre said. "You have to give credit to the opponent, but the disappointing thing is that we had a pretty awesome crowd for a rainy and cold night in Syracuse and we wish we could have put on a better show."
Notre Dame was the aggressor early in the match, registering several shots and challenging the Orange with a viable passing attack. The Fighting Irish eventually struck first as Evan Panken redirected a Harrison Shipp corner kick. Panken's shot flew past Syracuse goalkeeper Alex Bono to give Notre Dame a 1-0 advantage in the 17th minute.
Syracuse nearly matched ND's initial tally when Emil Ekblom scored on a header a few minutes later, but the goal was called back because the Orange was ruled offsides.
The Fighting Irish increased their advantage in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on another set-piece opportunity. Patrick Hodan's corner kick found the foot of Andrew O'Malley, who slotted it in the back of the net to give ND a two-goal lead heading into halftime.
ND closed the game's scoring in the 51st minute when Hodan finished his run from the right side of the pitch by skipping a shot past Bono for a 3-0 Irish lead.
Bono finished the match with seven saves, one shy of his career high. Notre Dame goalkeeper Patrick Wall made one save to earn the shutout.
Notre Dame held a 17-4 advantage in shots for the game and registered 11 corner kicks to SU's five.
The Orange is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 17 when it hosts No. 3 Connecticut at the SU Soccer Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m. and admission is free.
Match Notes: A crowd of 1,538 was on at the SU Soccer Stadium, the fifth-largest in the venue's history … SU's four shots was its fewest this season ... Bono is now has 97 career saves, three shy of 100 … The fourth-ranked Irish were the highest ranked team to visit the SU Soccer Stadium since Syracuse hosted No. 2 Louisville on Oct. 27, 2010.
