Syracuse University will finish in the top 40 in the NACDA Directors' Cup for the first time in school history after the final standings are compiled later this month, representing the best showing in school history.
All-American track & field performers Lauren Penney and Donald Pollitt put the exclamation point on an historic year for Syracuse University Athletics by finishing in the top eight in their respective events at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships to boost Syracuse's NACDA Director's Cup scoring to a school-record 555 points. A program best 10 teams represented Syracuse in the post-season, including four Final Four teams. The NACDA Directors' Cup recognizes collegiate athletics programs that maintain a broad-based program achieving success in many sports.
"This was the greatest finish across the board in SU Athletic history," said Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. "We could not be more proud of our outstanding coaches and student-athletes for our historic performance in the Directors' Cup. We are filled with the utmost confidence as our teams competed at the highest national level during the year and now enter the new era of SU Athletics in the ACC. It has been an amazing climb to get to this point and the challenge now is to continue the momentum and reach even higher."
The four programs that reached the Final Four were women's field hockey, men's basketball and women's and men's lacrosse, while men's soccer, men's cross country and women's basketball all earned invitations to the NCAA Tournament and the football team won the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, in addition to Penney and Pollitt representing the Orange at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
In addition, Syracuse has reached unprecedented success in the Capital One Cup, which measures the success of athletics departments through a scoring formula that selects which sports are to be counted, with more weight applied to higher profile programs such as football, men's basketball, women's basketball and softball. Syracuse has secured an historic eighth-place finish on the men's side and tied for 21st place with LSU in the women's field. The Capital One Cup is sponsored by ESPN.
