NEWTON, Mass. – Emil Ekblom continued his scoring spree with two goals against the Eagles, but the Orange's (8-4-0, 2-4-0 ACC) comeback bid fell short in a 3-2 defeat to Boston College (5-3-2, 3-2-1 ACC) Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Newton Campus Field.
"We had a tough start that really put us on the back foot," said SU head coach Ian McIntyre. "But we showed a lot of character and resilience to come back with two quality goals from Emil. We pushed and pushed until the final whistle and had some close calls at the end. It was an exciting college game."
The Eagles began the game aggressively, scoring twice in the match's first eight minutes. In the sixth minute, BC's Matt Wendelken headed home a Diego Medina-Mendez cross to give Boston College the early 1-0 advantage. Two minutes later, Medina-Mendez was again involved, as his shot found the back of the net to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
In the 15th minute, Ekblom notched his first goal of the game, tucking away a cross from Chris Nanco. Fellow rookie Oyvind Alseth was also credited with an assist on the play.
Ekblom struck again in the 53rd minute when he received a long pass from Jordan Murrell and slotted it past Boston College goalie Alex Kapp for the equalizer.
Boston College answered in the 58th minute when Nick Butler scored off of an Eagles' corner to reclaim a one-goal lead, 3-2.
SU's best opportunity to again draw even came in the 75th minute. Forward Grant Chong's shot rang off the post. Syracuse registered three corner kick opportunities in the final two minutes, but could not convert and time eventually expired.
Orange goalie Alex Bono recorded one save, while Kapp finished with three saves for the Eagles.
Wendelken and Medina-Mendez finished with one goal and one assist each to pace the BC offense.
The Eagles held a slim 11-10 advantage in shots for the match, while the Orange dominated on corner kicks, registering 11 to Boston College's three.
Syracuse will look to rebound from the loss when it hosts Pittsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 12. The Orange and Panthers kick off at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free.
Match Notes: Including his two goals today, Ekblom has 11 points (five goals, one assist) in the past two games … Ekblom leads the team and the ACC with eight goals this season … Murrell's assist was his team-best sixth of the season. Murrell has 13 career assists, tied with Ed Pinon (1989-90) for 10th on SU's all-time list ... Nanco's assist on Ekblom's first-half goal was the first of his career.
