ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Orange (4-1-0) scored three times in the second half and used solid defense to defeat NJIT, 4-0, on Friday, Sept. 7 to begin Mayor's Cup XXXVI competition at Elmore Field.
"It was a terrific result against a good NJIT team," SU head coach Ian McIntyre said. "We had an outstanding team performance and that first goal really allowed us to carry the momentum into the second half."
Friday's match remained scoreless until the 40th minute when senior Ted Cribley lined up for SU's third corner kick of the opening period. Cribley's serve was deflected, but Jordan Murrell corralled it and blasted a shot to the top corner of the goal to give the Orange a 1-0 lead.
The Orange increased its advantage in the 63rd minute when a Murrell corner found the head of Skylar Thomas, who pushed it past NJIT goalkeeper Lars Maalen-Johansen for a 2-0 advantage. SU added another goal in the 81st minute when junior Tony Asante took a pass from senior Louis Clark, spun inside the box, and fired it low past Maalen-Johansen for his team-leading fourth tally of the year.
In the 83rd minute, sophomore Nick Perea put the finishing touches on the victory when he scored from the top of the box after a failed NJIT clearance.
SU freshman goalie Alex Bono made three saves to record his third shutout of the season. Maalen-Johansen recorded five saves for NJIT (2-3-0).
Syracuse controlled the entire match, outshooting the Highlanders, 14-4. The Orange also attempted 12 corner kicks for just one for NJIT.
The Orange concludes play at the Mayor's Cup against St. Bonaventure on Sunday, Sept. 9 at Elmore Field. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
Match Notes: Friday's match was the 100th for McIntyre at Elmore Field ... His Elmore Field record stands at 71-17-12 (.770) as a Hartwick player, head coach, Oneonta State head coach, and Syracuse head coach … Syracuse has scored 10 goals in its last two matches, the most combined goals in back-to-back games since 1989 when the Orange scored 11 in consecutive contests against Oneonta (2-0) and Niagara (9-0) … Murrell's three points (one goal and one assist) were a career high.
