LAS VEGAS – Senior Ted Cribley scored his third goal of the season, but Cal State Fullerton (2-6-0) scored twice in the first half and once in the second to defeat the Orange, 3-1, on Sunday, Sept. 16 at the UNLV Nike Invitational. The loss snapped SU's (6-2-0) four-match winning streak.
"Overall, we are disappointed with the defeat," said SU head coach Ian McIntyre. "However, our energy and enthusiasm were great in difficult conditions."
Cribley put the Orange ahead in the fourth minute when he stole the ball from the Titan defender and launched a shot past goalkeeper Adam Zepeda.
The Titans answered in the 30th minute when Gerzon Blanco headed a corner kick into the back of the net. Cal State Fullerton added another goal 3:44 later off the head of Jesse Escalante.
Ian Ramos recorded Cal State Fullerton's last goal in the 49th minute to produce the final margin.
Rookie goalkeeper Alex Bono tied had five saves in a little more than 71 minutes of action before receiving a red card. He was ejected from the match and redshirt freshman Andrew Coughlin finished the game. Coughlin totaled one save, knocking away a Titan penalty kick.
Both sides recorded 12 shots in the game and the Orange held a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Syracuse opens BIG EAST play against Seton Hall on Saturday, Sept. 22. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free.
Match Notes: Coughlin's stop on Ritchie Gonzalez's penalty kick was the first save of his career ... Cribley's goal was his third of the season ... The Orange is 0-2-0 all-time against Cal State Fullerton.
