SYRACUSE, N.Y. - In its third straight game of producing more than 400 yards of offense, Syracuse football (1-2) earned its first win of 2012, defeating Stony Brook (2-1), 28-17, on Saturday at the Carrier Dome. The Orange offense racked up 549 total yards, led by quarterback Ryan Nassib going 22-of-35 passing for 335 yards and three touchdowns.
Wide receiver Marcus Sales finished with 117 receiving yards, recording his fourth straight 100-yard game. Sales' touchdown catch in the fourth quarter extended his streak to four consecutive games with at least one touchdown reception.
Stony Brook tallied 217 yards rushing in the game, led by Hofstra transfer Miguel Maysonet's 158 yards on 21 carries and one score, but the Orange defense held the Seawolves to just 94 yards through the air and shut them out in the second half to rally from a 17-14 deficit at the break.
The Seawolves were the first to get on the board when Kyle Essington hit Kevin Norrell for a 63-yard touchdown down the left sideline, making it 7-0 3:39 into the game.
Syracuse struck back when Nassib found running back Prince-Tyson Gulley for a 61-yard touchdown to even the score, 7-7. The scoring drive lasted two plays, totaled 63 yards, and took just 38 seconds. It was the longest play of SU's season so far and the second-longest completion of Nassib's career (62 yards to Van Chew vs. Rhode Island, 2011).
The Seawolves added a 20-yard field goal with 4:18 left in the first quarter to take a 10-7 lead.
Freshman Ashton Broyld's first career touchdown run, a 22-yard dash to paydirt, put Syracuse ahead for the first time 14-10, however, Maysonet answered with a 71-yard touchdown to put the Seawolves back in front, 17-14, at the intermission.
In the second half, Nassib directed a nine-play, 85-yard drive that included a 38-yard completion to Sales and ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jarrod West early in the third quarter. West's touchdown was his first this season, giving the Orange a 21-17 lead.
The Orange extended its lead to 28-17 with 5:53 remaining in the game when Nassib found Sales for a 19-yard touchdown with 5:53 to play.
On the next Stonty Brook series, corner Brandon Reddish intercepted Essington with 3:22 left to end any chance of a Seawolves' rally.
Syracuse rushed for a season-high 214 yards in the contest. Jerome Smith led the Orange ground attack with a career-best 95 yards. Broyld added 61 yards on 10 carries.
After surrendering 261 total yards in the first half, the Orange defense stiffened in the second half, giving up just 50 yards to the Seawolves. Dyshawn Davis and Marquis Spruill led the defensive charge with eight tackles each.
For Stony Brook, Essington only completed four passes, going 4-for-19 for 94 yards. He threw one touchdown and was intercepted twice.
Dominick Reyes paced the Stony Brook defense with 11 tackles (eight solo).
The Orange travels next to Minnesota on Saturday, Sept. 22, to face the Golden Gophers at 8 p.m. ET (Big Ten Network).
