Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Stony Brook Head Coach Chuck Priore
On if he was surprised by his team’s performance:
“No, I am not surprised. I think our kids did an excellent job of executing the game plan. Certainly they should be a better team. I think they were at the end of the game. That’s why the score was what it was. I am very proud of how we played. We made some mistakes in the second half that hurt us. Big holding penalty on first down. They got a first down, came back. We’re not going to win that game. It didn’t surprise me.”
On the defense stopping Syracuse within the five yard line twice:
“Our defense faces the run game every day in practice and they face pretty good ones. We’re tough. We played well. They didn’t get fancy and we didn’t get fancy. I guess we won that battle.”
On not scoring in the second half:
“Mistake penalties. Miscues. A couple of things you certainty can’t have happen against a good football team. They (Syracuse) certainly were astounding. I think because our offense didn’t keep the ball. First half we kept the ball. That’s why the score was what it was. I believe it was 17-14. We had time to possess the ball. The second half we didn’t and we couldn’t string anything together. The defense was on the field and we played valiantly. But we will go back and get better tomorrow.”
On poor field position following a Syracuse scores:
“It certainty didn’t kill us in field position at that point. Three times in those situations we got first downs. A holding penalty on that play brought us back and that caused the field positions.
On the running game slowing down in the second half:
“They made some adjustments. I think we had them game-planned pretty well in the first half. I think our kids executed what we put together. We took advantage of some things early. We played really physical. We had some great plays. I mean Miguel Maysonet’s touchdown run is a highlight film. They (Syracuse) moved up front a little more. They took their wide technique and tightened them down a little bit. Moved them into some gaps, changed some gaps on us. And they did a good job.”
On confusing Syracuse on defense in the first half:
“Our coaches were very confident going into the game. We couldn’t make them be things they weren’t comfortable with. Once again they went into he second half and made some adjustments.”
On trying to shorten they game plan by running:
“That’s what we like to do. That’s what we do every game regardless of who we play.
On this game in comparison to two years ago against South Florida:
“The biggest difference in this team was when I told them about four minutes before we went out for the coin toss is that two years ago we were jumping up and down, screaming and yelling. We were so excited to play and we spent all of our energy in the locker room. This team didn’t say a word. We came off pre-game, went to the locker room and sat down. We were focused, took the field and played really well.”
On what’s next:
“You know, what we do every week. Just get back to the basics, watch the film, see what we need to do, get healthy. Make sure we are healthy.”
On playing in the Carrier Dome:
“We’ve played some of these games already. We played South Florida at Raymond James Stadium. We played at UTEP last year, which was a fun environment. I was happy with that line. We didn’t have procedural penalties. We did the things we needed to do from that perspective.”
On Maysonet’s touchdown run:
“First of all, Mike Lisi our center had a tremendous block on that play. He’s our center. He ran at full steam to the right. He cut the backside line backer. Miguel (Maysonet) jumped over the first guy that hit him, landed on his feet and outran everyone to the end zone. If you watch him, that’s what he does.”
On the running backs getting yards after contact:
“Our backs are tough kids. You saw Coker what he did running through those things. We’ve got two good running backs that can play at any level.”
On the noise level in the Carrier Dome:
“It caused some implications in the huddle, but it’s part of football.”
On whether the second half was more what he did wrong or Syracuse shutting them down:
“It’s probably a combination and I am going to go back and watch the film. I certainty believe that the couple of penalties we had and the couple of blown assignments and a couple of balls that were not through on time. When you put that all together it isn’t one individual that stepped up. It starts with me. Coaching is what it is all about.”
On if more first downs could have generated something:
“I think if we could have got those first downs and they weren’t penalties and we get ourselves into good positions we would have had our opportunities.”
